What Were The Biggest Selling Films Of 2018?

Black Panther

The Greatest Showman takes home the crown of the best-selling film of 2018, based on physical and digital sales across the year.  In November the Official Film Chart – the world’s first chart to include film downloads – was launched and now we can reveal the Top 40 biggest selling film titles on disc and download combined for 2018.

Dominating the film and music charts throughout 2018, The Greatest Showman has been unstoppable.  The musical about P. T. Barnum and his collection of oddities is the most downloaded film to date, amassing over 770,000 digital downloads since its release in April. Despite this, The Greatest Showman’s sales were 72% physical, totalling 2.69 million units across both physical and digital formats.

The musical sold more than double the year’s Number 2, Avengers: Infinity War, which was one of three Marvel titles in the Top 10 with Black Panther (8) and Thor: Ragnarok (10) also appearing.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again had the honour of being the first Christmas Number 1 on the Official Film Chart and makes a huge impact since its November release, singing and dancing its way to the third biggest seller of 2018, shifting nearly 1.2 million copies in just a month and a half.

Family films proved ever-popular in 2018, with Paddington 2 (5) and Peter Rabbit (6) cementing themselves firmly in the Top 10. They are in good company, with family-friendly titles making up a quarter of the Top 40. Paddington 2 was particularly popular with DVD purchasers, who made up 74% of the total sales figures.

According to BASE, the Home Entertainment market grew by 10% last year, with digital film sales up 36% year-on-year. Helping to boost this was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at Number 7, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom at Number 9, both selling particularly well on download with more than 270,000 digital copies each.
