The past month had a couple of surprising, but exciting, announcements.
The first film trailer to stomp up was ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’, which continues on a few years after the events of ‘Minus One’ and sees the King of Monsters reawaken once more, and face off against it’s biggest rival. ‘Minus One’ quickly became one of my favourite Godzilla films as well as a lower-budget success story at the Oscars, so this one was already going to be a must watch.
But the sequel has made news by being the first film in the franchise to be rated R, which begs the question: what could have warranted this high of a certificate for the first time in the Kaiju’s history? The other big talking point to come out of the film is the introduction of King Ghidorah! With the film still being set in the 1940’s, I’m even more intrigued with how Japan will deal with the space dragon and I’m looking forward to seeing its design.
Another very big surprise belongs to one where its predecessor was released 20 years and was a low-budget indie horror. ‘Black Sheeps’ continues on from the 2006 film ‘Black Sheep’ which followed a farm that experimented on their sheep, turning them into carnivorous monsters where their bite turned people into Weresheep (yes this is a real film)! The sequel continues on 20 years later, and the Weresheep virus is now out in the wild. When a young woman’s father gets bitten, she vows to cure him no matter the cost…even if it means going into the old, now locked off, farm. ‘Black Sheep’ was an insanely weird but funny and gory horror that should be given more attention, so I’m glad to see the sequel isn’t taking itself too seriously either.
Complete with a sheep cult and sheep puns, it’s obvious the 20-year gap is non-existent when it comes to this. And the new slate of characters will give the film a different perspective. It’s just a question of whether it’ll follow a similar plot to its predecessor or try and add something new to the formula.
