2/ ALIENS. 1986. DIRECTED BY JAMES CAMERON.
Often seen as one of, if not the greatest sci-fi film of the ‘80’s, and possibly of all time, how is it only second place? We’ll get to that later. Ripley returns to the dreaded planet from Alien, where the eggs were found, to investigate the disappearance of a human colony. This time she is accompanied by a team of heavily armed and trained marines (including Michael Beihn and Bill Paxton again). They arrive, only to find themselves outnumbered and amazingly unprepared as they face an alien horde of hundreds, led by the colossal alien queen.
I’m not a fan of the alien designs in this one. The queen looks amazing, but the troops…I don’t know, something always bothered me about them. They’re over-designed and just not scary. That is my only complaint about this film. Everything else isn’t just good, it’s pitch perfect. This really is one of the best films ever made, in general. James Cameron, who has made almost constant great films (and Avatar), brings his best and gives us the best film he ever made (yes, I like this more than Terminator 1 and 2). This is what a sequel should do, what Predator 2 attempted, but better. By which I mean actually being good. This is not just a sequel, it is its own thing. I know many who actually prefer this one over the original. It takes the first film and cranks everything about it up to eleven.
Sigourney Weaver earned an Oscar nomination for her performance as Ripley in this. This is a sci-fi action/horror film about people fighting giant alien creatures. Just think about that! Her connection with Newt is among the best I have seen in film. All the other characters are fantastic too. There are two cuts again. The special edition gives us an amazing plotline about Ripley having a daughter who died, which makes the connection with Newt much better. But the rest is just filler. Personally, I prefer the theatrical cut simply because the Special Edition feels a little too long to me. If you haven’t seen this already…what’s wrong with you?
