Alien And Predator Ranking

9/ ALIEN RESURRECTION. 1997. DIRECTED BY JEAN-PIERRE JEUNET.

This is definitely an improvement over AVP:R. But that isn’t saying much. Of all people, this film was made by the director of Amelie and written by Firefly and Buffy creator Joss Whedon. It also happens to be amongst the stupidest sci-fi films ever made. The story is set 200 years after the events of Alien 3. Series protagonist Ellen Ripley has been cloned and a new alien queen is born. Soon the queen gives birth and so Ripley and a crew of space pirates (including Winona Ryder and Ron Pearlman) must fight their way off a ship swarming with a new breed of highly intelligent aliens.

This film is bad! But it’s at least funny bad. It’s beyond stupid and features easily the dumbest scenes of all the listed films. But at least it commits. Technical-wise, it’s still pretty bad. The colours are awful, always going between poo brown and puke yellow. The aliens are probably a bit too slimy this time around. The directing and writing are definitely of the time (which is a nice way of saying weird in a bad way). The acting is, serviceable. The characters are at least memorable, but not very good. And the film just feels like a parody of the series and not a serious “this is the official fourth film” entry. Whedon admits to not liking this film, because they didn’t do justice to his script. That’s pretty bold to say, considering that the script is half of what’s wrong with it.

Alien Resurrection doesn’t get insultingly bad until the human/alien hybrid arrives at the end (what is it with this series and hybrids?). Which is a shame because the lead up, while not good is actually pretty fun. All the Alien films have two cuts and this one is no different. Here, I’d say you’d best skip the director’s cut. The ending is really odd and the opening has easily the worst CGI I’ve ever seen in a blockbuster film. Just know what you’re getting into, and you could have some guilty pleasure fun…but nothing else.
