    Underwater: Trailer Talk

Underwater: Trailer Talk. William Eubank is a director/writer that I love. He wrote and directed the 2011 Angels & Airwaves movie ‘LOVE’ as well as the 2013 Sci-Fi film ‘The Signal’ so I’ve always looked forward to his next project. And, 7 years later, it’s here!

‘Underwater’ is a Sci-Fi film starring Kristen Stewart and T.J.Miller. After an earthquake hits their subterranean laboratory, the crew on board must get to safety. However, it’s not just the waters that they should be afraid of.

While the trailer is edited a little strangely, and uses too many slow-motion shots, this looks like ‘Alien’ in the Ocean! The sense of isolation and claustrophobia grabs you from the second the trailer starts and doesn’t let go. Hopefully, this feeling carries into the actual film too.

I’m also hoping Kristen Stewart is good in this; she was fantastic in the 2017 horror film ‘Personal Shopper’, so I’m looking forward to seeing her return to the big screen.

Overall, ‘Underwater’ looks tense, isolating and claustrophobic and I hope it keeps those feelings throughout the film.

‘Underwater’ will be in cinemas 7th February 2020.

  • What Did Jack Do? The BRWC Review

What Did Jack Do? The BRWC Review

In my last Trailer Talk article, I stated that the film industry needs to take more risks and release wackier films, instead of conforming to the norm of sequels and remakes. The day after the article was uploaded, I found out about the new short film by David Lynch called ‘What Did Jack Do?’

‘What Did Jack Do?’ is a 17-minute short film that was released on Netflix on 20th January 2020. It was written, directed, edited by and starring David Lynch (‘Eraserhead’ and TV show ‘Twin Peaks’).

The film revolves around a detective interviewing an attempted murder suspect…which is a talking monkey.

As you’d expect from David Lynch, this is a strange film. While I’m still not sure I enjoyed it, I’m glad I watched it. The film’s black and white visualization and its framing makes this piece of work seem almost film noir-ish. The dialogue and tone of the film embraces this genre too, and the film portrays itself seriously, to the point where you forget that one of the characters is a monkey. The story would work just as well if Jack was a human character.

This is a unique approach to a scenario audience have become familiar with (the interrogation). However, the editing should’ve been tighter and more concise in the first half; most of the shots were painfully, and unnecessarily, long.

As well as this, the script needed a rewrite as some dialogue went nowhere and were just meaningless phrases and puns that served no purpose to the overall plot. It also has a musical number, sung by Jack, which just occurs out of nowhere and, again, served no purpose.

While I’m not sure I enjoyed it, I’m glad I experienced ‘What Did Jack Do?’. I appreciate the amount of work and effort that was put into it, especially since David Lynch did most of it including writing, directing, editing, acting, set design and set construction.

It’s an oddly welcoming return for David Lynch and, in its short runtime, it gives audiences a unique spin on the Interrogation scene that has become so well known in the film industry.

    Trailer Talk: Guns Akimbo

‘Guns Akimbo’ stars Daniel Radcliffe (‘Harry Potter’ franchise) and Samara Weaving (‘Ready or Not’). After being ambushed by a group of thugs, Miles (played by Radcliffe) wakes up to find that guns have been bolted to his hands, and that he is unwillingly taking part in a life-or-death game that is broadcast to millions online.

This film looks like a mixture of ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World’ and 2018’s ‘Upgrade’ and I am completely ok with that! I’m happy to see the return of Daniel Radcliffe and very interested to see how he’d do in a film as weird as this. It’s a role that’s completely unexpected from him. Samara Weaving is also fantastic, and I hope the film gives her a good portion of screen time. After playing the lead in last year’s horror ‘Ready or Not’, I want to see more of Samara Weaving’s acting.

The film industry needs to take more of a gamble and release wacky films like this, instead of constantly churning out sequels and remakes. While I can see similarities to other films, this is a completely unique idea and one I look forward to seeing.

‘Guns Akimbo’ will be in cinemas 28th February 2020

    Trailer Talk: Morbius

So, after failing to capture what the Joker is in ‘Suicide Squad’, Jared Leto has set his sights on Marvel films…and this role looks perfect for him!

‘Morbius’ stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, a biochemist who tries to find a cure for his rare blood disease. However, he accidently infects himself with a form of vampirism.

This film looks like a lot of fun and, after the abomination that was the Leto Joker, I really hope this role suits him better. The visual effects look fantastic, and the small glimpse viewers get of the vampire at the end is a delight. Overall, it’ll be great to see Jared Leto join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yes, this film is set in the MCU according to the trailer. Graffiti showing the Tobey Maguire Spiderman and Michael Keaton’s Vulture (from Spiderman: Homecoming) are both shown right at the end. Is it possible we could see Morbius in the third Spiderman film?

‘Morbius’ will be in cinemas 31st July 2020.

Morbius is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is intended to be the second film in Sony’s Marvel Universe. The film is being directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script by Matt Sazama, Burk SharplessArt Marcum and Matt Holloway, and stars Jared Leto in the title role alongside Matt SmithAdria ArjonaJared HarrisAl Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson.

After announcing plans for a new shared universe of films inspired by Spider-Man characters beginning with Venom (2018), Sony was revealed to be developing one based on Morbius. Sazama and Sharpless had written a script by November 2017, with Leto and Espinosa officially joining in June 2018. Work began in earnest at the end of the year with further casting, ahead of a production start in February 2019 in London. Filming was set to take 12 weeks, and was confirmed to have been completed by June 2019. As of June 2019, the film is in the post-production stage.

New Mutants (Trailer 2) – Trailer Talk

After Marvels ‘New Mutants’ was delayed and pushed back to 2018, everything went quiet, news-wise. That is until now, when an announcement 3 days was made that a new trailer would be released on the 6th January.

‘New Mutants’ is an adaptation of the Marvel Comics series. Five mutants are taken to a secret facility against their will and told that they’re there to be treated. However, they soon realize that they’re, in fact, in danger and must fight their way out.

Any worries about the long delay ruining the film have been blown away. The film reflects the same tone and atmosphere as ‘Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors’ and I am grateful for that, especially since that’s the strongest entry in the ‘Elm Street’ franchise in my opinion.

The cast (Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Antonio Banderas and Charlie Heaton) are still fantastic, and I look forward to seeing them together on-screen. After worrying about whether the delays will ruin the film, I realize I had nothing to worry about: This looks to be a fun and spooky film from Josh Boone, the director of ‘The Fault in Our Stars’.

The film will be in cinemas 3rd April 2020.

The New Mutants is a group of fictional teenaged mutant superheroes-in-training appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. They have been the main characters of three successive comic book series, which were spin-offs of the X-Men franchise.

The first team of New Mutants characters was created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. They first appeared in The New Mutants (September 1982), part of the line Marvel Graphic Novel, and are subsequently featured in their own title from 1983 until 1991. Like its parent title, The New Mutants highlighted interpersonal and group conflict as well as action and adventure, and featured a large ensemble cast. With the end of the first series, the characters were relaunched as X-Force in a new, eponymous series.

The second New Mutants series, launched in 2003, featured a new group of teenage mutants. Unlike the original New Mutants, they were part of a huge cast of students at the Xavier Institute. In 2004, it was relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X, after which the central group was formally dubbed the “New Mutants.” In the aftermath of the “M-Day” crossover storyline in late 2005, the remaining students were merged into one junior team, the New X-Men.
