Exploring The Last Decade’s Most Iconic Movies Based On True Events

There are many reasons millions flock to the cinema to enjoy movies, from escaping reality to exploring new fictional worlds. But there are also movies that are rooted in true stories that allow us to learn more about the world we live in. And these are exactly the type of movies we’ll be exploring below.

Molly’s Game

Molly’s Game is a biographical film based on the book of the same name. It follows the story of Molly Bloom, a mogul skier who had to quit her Olympic dreams due to a severe injury. Played by Jessica Chastain, we learn how Bloom became a high-stakes poker game organiser for the rich and famous. As she gains success in her field, the stakes start getting higher. Whilst we won’t spoil too much, Bloom manages to attract the attention of some unsavoury people who want in on the money.

Some names that are mentioned by Bloom herself are Matt Damon, along with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck. Although none of the characters in the movie share the same name, it’s alleged that Player X is Tobey Maguire. So, if you’ve ever wanted to peek behind the world of A-listers and find out what they’re doing in their free time, this movie will certainly satisfy your curiosity.

Casino motifs are quite prominent in Hollywood movies, and for good reason. Thanks to the advent of platforms that provide games like online casino slots, the industry is continuing to gain traction in the modern era. In fact, online data provided by sites like Statista predict it will reach revenues of $107.70 billion in 2025. Moreover, as this movie proves, even celebrities are just as interested in casino gaming as we are, adding to the overall success of this theme.

Oppenheimer

The movie Oppenheimer takes us back to a pivotal moment in history, following the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer. You’ll most likely have heard of this name, as the theoretical physicist is most known as the father of the atomic bomb. This film depicts the development and creation of the bomb that could end wars, a race toward peace via aggressive means.

Thanks to the direction of Christopher Nolan, along with the stunning acting chops of Cillian Murphy, we get to see both the brilliance and moral dilemma that is often associated with such scientific discoveries. This truly brings up the question if the means are worth the result, as Oppenheimer himself is riddled with guilt after the deployment of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

At the time of writing, Oppenheimer is the highest-grossing biographical film of all time. Whilst this movie has been quite controversial, as George Santayana said, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. As such, we believe everyone should take the time to see Oppenheimer, as it dives deep into the consequences of victory and how inhumane we can become to obtain it.

Emily

Emily follows the life of the author Emily Bronte, specifically what led her to write her acclaimed novel, Wuthering Heights. In the movie, the reasoning is her tumultuous romance with the young curate William Weightman. Although the romance in question is completely fictional, the portrayal of the author by Emma Mackey is quite accurate.

Emily Bronte was known for being introverted, but still favouring freedom above all else. A deeply private person who had few friends apart from her sisters, Anne and Charlotte. The narrative that Wuthering Heights was based on this fictional romance adds an interesting twist, as it’s hard to imagine how such a solitary person who wasn’t wed had crafted such a passionate story filled with romance and revenge.

Whilst the movie does take some creative liberties, it does a great job at portraying the world that Emily Bronte is part of. This was a time when women weren’t just merely discouraged from literary pursuits, but often forced to adopt pen names to hide their gender. If you do decide to watch this film, which we do recommend, be prepared. It is filled with more heartbreak than joy.

Conclusion

In the last decade, we’ve seen some of the most incredible movies ever grace the big screen. By balancing authenticity with a unique narrative, the aforementioned truly stand out as some of the most significant releases we’ve had the honour to enjoy.
