Check out these two fantastic, powerfully moving clips from the new documentary film McLaren, which have been launched this week. The tale of one of New Zealand’s most treasured sons and the father of Britain’s most cherished motor racing empire, McLaren is a compelling ode to never giving up on a dream. It is out in cinemas for one night only on Thursday 25th May, and on Blu-ray, DVD and digital platforms from 29th May.
The clip features a voiceover of Bruce McLaren’s eulogy for teammate Timmy Mayer, following his untimely death at the age of just 26 in a racing incident at Longford Circuit, Tasmania, which stands as a testament to Bruce’s take on life and proved to be a mantra for the way he ran his Formula 1 team from then on, prior to his own untimely death (32). Bruce’s words are played over fantastic footage of Timmy and himself on the track in the early 60s. Bruce McLaren: “To do something well is so worthwile, but to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one’s ability. I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.”
The clip features footage from Spa, Belgium GP 1968, when Bruce won a Grand Prix in a car of his own design and construction. It was the first ever Formula 1 GP win for team McLaren, and only the second time a driver had won a GP with his name on the nose of the car – a feat that hasn’t been achieved, since.
