4/ ALIEN 3. 1992. DIRECTED BY DAVID FINTCHER.
Sadly I can’t go as in-depth as I’d like to on the matter, so I’ll just say look up the production on this film. I don’t think I’ve seen a films production be so catastrophic. It took five directors and over ten writers to make this film! It’s actually a miracle that this film is even remotely watchable. But that all comes down to David Fincher (who has since had interesting things to say about this film). Ripley finds herself to be the only survivor of Aliens and awakens from her cryogenic sleep on a prison planet. However an alien has followed her. This time, though, the host it erupts from is an animal (a dog in one version and an ox in the other), making a different type of alien creature. Soon, the worst of humanity must come together to save the world from its most dangerous threat.
Alien 3 is easily the most polarising entry in this list. People seem to either love this film or hate it. I’m not blind to its flaws. The effects are awful at times. It’s poorly paced. That opening moment is bit of a ball-kick. And (in the theatrical cut at least) there’s just an overly depressing tone to it. But, I love this film. I love story. The characters are fun and are well acted. The kills are enjoyably gory (this is possibly the most violent of all the listed films). The alien itself looks amazing (design-wise at least). And the ending is a good, fun, claustrophobic thrill-ride. I actually think that the bit that annoys people actually works in this story and with the themes that are given. The music is great. The directing, although clearly restrained by the studio, is actually really good too. Fintcher hasn’t directed a bad film, and while this may be among his weaker I still think he delivers.
There are, again, two cuts of this film; the theatrical cut and the Assembly Cut. I do like the theatrical cut, though I think it’s fun with a lot of problems. But I must recommend seeing the Assembly Cut. If you have to pick one go with that. It adds 30-minutes worth of runtime and changes most scenes in the rest of it. It’s pretty much an entirely different film. And it is much better put together. Alien 3 is a film that really doesn’t get as much love as it deserves and I can’t recommend it enough. I simply refuse to believe that I am the only one who loves this film.
