Review: The Voices

By Peter Killip.

Strong contender for weirdest film this year is Marjane Satrapi’s queer little outing that brings us the happy-go-lucky tale of a paranoid schizophrenic who starts skipping his meds and under guidance from his pet cat and dog (also voiced by Reynolds) starts clearing fridge space for his colleague’s heads.

Nowhere near funny enough to be an out and out comedy and not really grim enough to be truly disturbing, it’s a weird stew of a film that never seems to get the veg-meat ratios right.Ryan Reynolds and Anna Kendrick put in some solid work and Gemma Arterton is warmer than a refrigerated decapitated head has any claim to be but the script needed a polishing up before they worried about finding a fork lift truck driving Messiah for a weirdly shoe-horned musical number.

Not a complete waste but not much to write home about either when you scrape away the kooky veneer. A film that managed the blackly comic vibe a lot better was “Parents” in ’89 , helmed by the brilliantly monikered Bob Balaban and you’re at least treated to a cannibal Randy Quaid. winner winner Chicken dinner.
