If you really love the movies, just watching them may not be enough; if so there are some great apps to help you get more out of some of your favourite blockbusters.

Five great movie apps

  • James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’. One of the best movie-based game apps out there, this app wins on graphics, attention to detail and the sheer size of the world you can explore. It has a strong story and is a challenge to complete, but without being too frustrating. Suitable for iOS and Android.
  • ‘Chestburster’. The ultimate app for ‘Alien’ fans, this uses a printable icon you can attach to a t-shirt, which, when scanned like a QR code, turns into an image of a three-dimensional monster forcing its way out of your chest, complete with sound. It’s available for Android, iPhone and iPad.
  • Marvel’s ‘The Avengers – Iron Man: Mark VII’. An interactive comic based on the movie, it adds a lot of extra depth to the medium Tony Stark originally specialized in. Robert Downey Jr. provides the voiceover and there’s lots of interesting material about how the Iron Man armor was developed.
  • ‘Toy Story’: Letters and Sounds. A fantastic app for younger film fans, this is very simple to use and lets players interact with favorite characters as they play a game, solve puzzles and learn about spelling. The main game is addictive enough to hook some adults too. Available for iPhone and Android.
  • ‘Star Wars’ Sound Board’. Sometimes the simple things are the best. This app lets you recreate the famous sounds of the Star Wars universe on your iPhone; from light-sabers to R2D2. Use it to create your own special effects or add extra character to conversations. For iOS and Android.

General apps for movie fans

  • iTunes Movie Trailers. Available free and really simple to use, this app is constantly updated with all the latest trailers in HD format and it gets many of them first.
  • Location Scout. Suitable for iPhone or Android, this is a must for movie fans who like to get out and about and visit the places where their favorite scenes were shot.
  • Movie Vault. With a cute library-style interface, this iOS and Android app recreates the feeling of hunting for treasure in an old video store, with lots of cult movies to discover.
  • Rotten Tomatoes. This app makes it easy to access the Internet’s largest professional review database and quickly check out which movies are worth seeing.

The great thing about apps is that they’re constantly changing and if you’ve ever thought about designing or improving a mobile app for film fans, the above are just what you need to get your creative juices flowing.

Any of these apps will enrich your viewing experiences, let you continue to enjoy your favorite films long after the credits have rolled and help you connect with others who share your passion. As they are all free or very low cost, there’s nothing to stop you from downloading them right away and letting the fun begin.
