A critically-acclaimed short film screened at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals has been launched to the public with a premiere screening in its home city of Lincoln, UK.

Mouse-X is the latest production from filmmaker Justin Tagg, who is also a Senior Lecturer in Creative Advertising at the University of Lincoln. He produced the film following a hugely successful crowd-funding campaign back in 2012, and in the last year, has been invited to screenMouse-X at BAFTA and a glittering array of international film festivals.

Justin has seen his creation showcased at Sci-Fi London, the Oscar-qualifying Rhode Island International Short Film Festival, Hollyshorts in Los Angeles and the National Irish Science Fiction Film Awards, where it was nominated for Best Film. Mouse-X was recently screened at the competitive, BAFTA-qualifying Raindance Festival in London, which is recognised as one of the most important independent film festivals in the world, and later this year it will compete for Best Film at the Santa Monica Independent Film Festival as well as travelling to events in Australia and across the USA.

The film has now been made available for the public to view online, after an exclusive screening was held at the Ritz cinema in Lincoln to celebrate its success.

Justin said: “When you work so hard for so long on a film that you’re incredibly passionate about, you want as many people as possible to see it. Since we began this project it has been about one thing; telling a story that challenges the way people think about the world, but telling it in a way that captures their imagination and makes them want to see more.”

Described by Matt Glasby, Film Critic at Total Film and GQ, as “one of the best short films I’ve ever seen”, Mouse-X is a mystery science fiction story about Anderson – a man who wakes to find himself trapped in a building with a thousand clones of himself, begging the question, ‘who are you, if you’re not the only you?’

The film, which was written and directed by Justin, was created and filmed in Lincoln. After crowd-funding to the tune of £5,000, the team also received support from a number of businesses across Europe. From hard drives contributed by Western Digital, to paint supplied by Craig&Rose and rooms from the Double Tree by Hilton, they secured a further £10,000 from in-kind contributions.

Justin added: “Following our crowd-funding campaign, which was more successful than we ever imagined, we then went on to build our own set in a Lincoln warehouse – the entire project has been so rewarding because we tackled it like entrepreneurs. Mouse-X is a film that we are extremely proud of, and we feel that it is something everybody from our crowd funding backers to our crew can take ownership ofThe next step is another short film in 2015, followed by a feature based on the premise of Mouse-X.”

Justin was supported in the creation of his film by a distinguished production team.  Director of Photography Hákon Pálsson was awarded a BAFTA in 2012, and Executive Producer Graeme Cox is known for his work on The Double, written and directed by Richard Ayoade and starring Jess Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. The composers behind the soundtrack for Mouse-X, Verbal Vigilante, also have their music and sound design on a host of major film trailers including The HobbitThorCaptain Phillips and The Dark Knight Rises. The lead actor in the film is Julian Nicholson, who has previously starred in A Case of DeceitLucky 7 and Heartland Son.

The Lincoln screening of Mouse-X on 1st October 2014 followed an official premiere at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square earlier this year.
