Best Apps For Enjoying Movies On Your Phone
While viral videos were once the only videos streaming on smartphones, mobile devices have now become many people’s go-to device for watching movies and television. People are going to the movies less and watching them on their phones more. A recent study by Harris Interactive found that nearly a third of people watch movies through a streaming service in their homes. With so many apps offering streaming video out there to choose from, here are some of the best to offer films on your smartphone:
Netflix
Netflix still reigns in the hearts of many as the number one streaming movie app. With its wide selection of movies and television from today and yesterday, Netflix’s streaming quality is just as good on a mobile device as it is over a PC or laptop. With unlimited access to a massive selection of films, Netflix allows users to create their own watch lists and even recommends content to users based on what they’ve watched in the past. Available with most streaming devices, smartphones, video game consoles and tablets, Netflix is the elder statesmen of streaming film directly to users, and has even begun to offer original content such as the primetime Emmy award winning “House of Cards”, starring Kevin Spacey.
Crackle
Crackle has a huge selection of free comedies, art films, documentaries and more, all completely unedited and in their original form. Crackle boasts having art films in their uncut forms that you can’t find on other streaming applications, and is very indie-film friendly. While some content will require a Crackle sign up and much of the film contains commercials, Crackle’s selection is constantly expanding and changing and remains free to this day. If art and indie films aren’t your thing, Crackle also offers a wide selection of television shows. Crackle is available on both Android and iOS smartphones.
VUDU
While really more ideal for tablets, VUDU is still an amazing app for smartphones. Initially free to download, VUDU offers users the chance to view a vast selection of films and television for $2 a viewing. With the enormous amount of free content available from other apps, a streaming video service based on microtransactions may seem crazy, but VUDU prides itself on frequently offering new releases long before they show up on other streaming video services. In a way, VUDU offers an experience more akin to buying a ticket when visiting a theater. Vudu is available for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, as well as many video game consoles. The only catch? If you plan to be mobile while watching video content, you might need a charger capable of charging your phone wirelessly.
SnagFilms
SnagFilms offers more than 10,000 advertising-sponsored documentary films, and even allows documentarians to submit their films for a chance to become streaming content on the app. With documentaries from PBS, National Geographic, and popular titles such as “Super Size Me” and “We Don’t Care About Music Anyway,” SnagFilms is a great app for exposing yourself to new films. Best of all, SnagFilms offers users the option to donate to the filmmakers, allowing many upstart documentarians a chance to not only reach an audience, but crowdsource funding for their next endeavor. Currently, the app is available for the iPad and iPhones, Android smartphones, and a variety of tablet devices.
