Applause For Award Winning Danish Film

New Danish film Applause will be opening in America, in preparation for awards season. The film, which stars Danish household name Paprika Steen, has been surrounded by Oscar buzz, and has also been submitted for consideration for Best Actress for the Golden Globes and SAG awards.

The film centres around Thea, an abrasive, alcoholic, but critically acclaimed actress, who, fresh out of rehab, makes the choice to reconnect with her sons, who she lost custody of during a divorce. Thea finds herself having to prove her worth to her ex husband, her sons and herself, and embarks on a difficult journey. Her gruelling stage life and the ghosts of the past slowly take their toll, until Thea is forced to face her inner voices.

The part, written especially for American born Steen, has been described a tour de force for the actress. Unfolding in short, intense episodes centering on Thea, and intercut with excerpts from ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf’, the film has been described as ‘utterly Compelling’, and takes inspiration from previous critical successes such as ‘Dogma.’

Directed by Steen’s real life partner Mikael Christian Rieks, and also featuring their eldest son, it’s a real family affair, funded by ‘New Danish Screen’, an initiative that supports new directors and experimental projects.

The film has already won awards around the world, and is being hailed as the ‘performance of a lifetime’ for Steen, who is already an award winning stage and screen actress. The New York times have branded it ‘One of the best screen performances of the year’. The film will be shown initially in Los Angeles, with the release being widened to New York in January 2011.
