BRWC Is 1: 52 Friday Review

The first ever post on BRWC was on Friday 15th August 2008, and since then there have been 52 Fridays upon which films have been released, here’s my 52 Friday Review:

Aug 15 – You Don’t Mess With The Zohan: Adam Sandler does a less annoying voice than usual, makes less money.
Aug 22 – Get Smart: One of 2008’s better blockbusters, surprisingly!
Aug 29 – Babylon A.D: Long-delayed Vin Diesel sci-fi that felt very much like the studio hack job that it was.
Sep 5 – Bangkok Dangerous: Pointless remake that strips away all the interesting bits about the original.
Sep 12 – Eden Lake: Hooray for unhappy endings! A Daily Mail readers paranoid camping fantasy.
Sep 19 – The Wave (Die Welle): Second best film of the year, a provocative social experiment.
Sep 26 – Taken: An absolute guilty pleasure, Neeson kills everyone, a deserved sleeper hit.
Oct 3 – The Fall: Best film of the year, Tarsem’s stunning and emotional fantasy adventure should become a cinematic classic.
Oct 10 – City of Ember: Hugely under-rated and over-looked old school feeling family adventure with an awesome cast and amazing design work.
Oct 17 – Eagle Eye: OTT rubbish techno-gibber North By Northwest knock-off.
Oct 24 – Ghost Town: Flacid comedy vehicle for Ricky Gervais.
Oct 31 – Quantum Of Solace: Like the all-action bit before a Bond film starts but stretched to 90 minutes.
Nov 7 – W.: A disappointingly fair handed look at the life of George W. Bush, damn you Oliver Stone for not being partisan!
Nov 14 – Zack & Miri Make A Porno: Very slight comedy from Kevin Smith, worth watching to see Jeff Anderson get a face full of poop.
Nov 21 – Blindness: Bleak adaptation of amazing novel, not quite as good as I hoped, but still brilliant.
Nov 28 – Changeling: Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jolie court Oscars and get stood up.
Dec 5 – Lakeview Terrace: Fine feuding neighbour’s thriller with great cast (see also; Neil LaBute trying to win back respect post-Wicker Man).
Dec 12 – The Day the Earth Stood Still: Officially the most boring film of the year.
Dec 19 – Twilight: I didn’t see it, but I could hear the screams.
Dec 26 – Yes Man: Jim Carrey plays a man who should be getting lots of therapy, but nobody seems to notice.
Jan 2 – The Spirit: People expected Sin City they got Dick Tracy by way of Daffy Duck.
Jan 9 – Slumdog Millionaire: Excessively happy poster art that gives way to upliftingly dark blockbuster.
Jan 16 – The Wrestler: Mickey Rourke carries a rather tired, saggy film playing a rather tired, saggy wrestler.
Jan 23 – Frost/Nixon: Everyone in this film wants an Oscar, nobody got one. It was pretty good though.
Jan 30 – Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist: I fell in love with Kat Dennings watching this.
Feb 6 – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: Fincher’s worst film.
Feb 13 – Friday the 13th: The true horror film that came out today was The Pink Panther 2.
Feb 20 – Gran Torino: Eastwood’s acting swansong is a darkly humorous tour-de-force, why did he have to sing the song over the end credits though?
Feb 27 – The International: Clive Owen stars in the blandest action thriller not to go to DTV.
Mar 6 – Watchmen: Some good performances and the odd stand-out sequence fail to mask a pretty soggy adaptation.
Mar 13 – Bronson: Essentially a British remake of Chopper.
Mar 20 – Duplicity: Clive Owen manages to star in two bland films in as many months.
Mar 27 – Knowing: Pure sci-fi hokum but brilliantly directed by Alex Proyas working on the blockbuster equivalent of a shoe-string budget.
Apr 3 – Religulous: Slightly inconclusive documentary wryly questioning the existence of God.
Apr 10 – Let the Right One In: I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, this wasn’t that good.
Apr 17 – Crank 2: High Voltage: Not as stupidly brilliant as the first, but a delirious diversion nonetheless.
Apr 24 – Observe & Report: Worth watching for the final 5 minutes, but tonally inconsistent.
May 1 – X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Absolute guff.
May 8 – Star Trek: Blockbuster of the year, a truly thrilling, funny, crowd-pleasing ride.
May 15 – Synecdoche, New York: Pretty much a horror film, but an off-beat, funny one.
May 22 – Night at the Museum 2: Battle at the Smithsonian: See comedians fund other projects by getting paid to be in this.
May 29 – Drag Me To Hell: It’s Sam Raimi back to horror, and it’s quite fun if derivative of his own (better) work.
June 5 – Terminator: Salvation: The best thing to come from this film was that Christian Bale diva strop.
June 12 – The Hangover: Sleeper comedy of the year. I still haven’t seen it though.
June 19 – North By Northwest: This masterpiece got a re-release (I just don’t think Transformers 2 deserves a mention… damn.)
June 26 – Year One: Terrible comedy from Harold Ramis, how the mighty have fallen.
July 3 – Public Enemies: Unconvincing period crime saga.
July 10 – Bruno: Harrison Ford’s best work in years.
July 17 – Moon: After starring alongside the likes of Nic Cage, George Clooney, Gene Hackman; turns out Sam Rockwell’s best co-star is himself.
July 24 – Antichrist: Ban this sick flick now (before we even watch it, just in case it’s as evil as I’m pretending I suspect it might be).
July 31 – The Taking of Pelham 123: Pedestrian remake about commuter chaos.
Aug 7 – G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra: Panto season comes early and gets genetically scrambled with a Playstation game.

And that brings us up to date… Happy 1st Birthday BRWC!
