Working with the trite and tested tag line: “The hunter becomes the hunted”, we have an inkling where this Israeli thriller helmed by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado is heading, right? Erm……not so much. Alright, colour me surprised. A person of interest gets abducted and tortured under mob rule questioning after the headless body of the chief interrogator’s daughter turns up in the woods, raped and surrounded with sweets. You can’t blame me for not expecting a laugh riot of sorts can you? Tarantino fought the corner for this one, hailing it as the best film of 2013 and you can understand where he was coming from.
Tar black humour seeps through an unapologetically grim subject matter and it pays dividends and then some, leaving the resulting mash-up resembling that of a Jo Nesbo farce directed by the brothers Coen that surprises with just how well it all holds together, will make you hear Buddy Holly with fresh ears and involves a sublime blowtorch interrogation scene that may just leave you thanking your lucky stars that you’re not THAT much a fan of creme brûlée anyway. Swaying sympathies, moral ambiguities and plenty of stings in this cautionary tale to go round, this is most assuredly one to hunt down.
