2001 Maniacs – One Step Away From Porn

    By nil.

A remake of legendary gore-meister Hershell Gordon-Lewis’ 2000 Maniacs2001 Maniacs goes for the ‘so bad its good’ style of horror but slightly misses the mark.

Three college slackers, Anderson, Corey and Nelson are on their way to Spring Break in Florida when an unexpected detour takes them into the small, off the map town of Pleasant Valley, South Carolina. They are joined by 3 drifters; Joey, Kat and Ricky, and biker couple Malcolm and Leah, who have all also arrived in the small town as a result of the road detour. They are all welcomed as guests of honour for the town’s annual ‘Guts and Glory Festival’, led by the sinister Mayor Buckman (Robert ‘Freddy’ Englund). Unknown to the 8 unsuspecting Northerners however, they are the main course of the festival BBQ, and they are killed off one by one in ultra gory fashion by the various residents of the town. The teens went for a taste of the old south, but the old south really gets a taste of them.

2001 Maniacs certainly lives up to its predecessor as far as blood and gore is concerned, but, for me, the characters are so lame and unconvincing that they are hardly worth caring about.
The film is riddled with the type of unconvincing and below par acting that one usually associates with a low-budget horror flick, you would see better at your local matinee on a Saturday afternoon or your son Timmy’s high school play. The actors prance around in an acting style just a step away from porn, so much so that at times you more than half expect some soft-core music to start up and the actors to strip off.

Robert Englund has been in some bad movies but this takes the cake. The Nightmare On Elm Street star must have really needed to pay the mortgage with his choice in taking on the role of the unfunny, camp Mayor Buckman in this film.

One thing I will say though is that director Tim Sullivan (who started out as a Production Assistant on such films as Cocktail3 Men And A Baby and The Godfather Part III) generates some good shots throughout the film. There are nice images of the surrounding countryside, the skyline and lighting throughout the film is really effective. Unfortunately, he co-wrote the script so he is hardly clear from blame.

The bottom line is that I have seen better acting in an episode of Coronation Street, and boy, is that saying a lot. Director Sullivan goes for a distinct tongue in cheek vibe, but unfortunately for him and his accountants the film’s lack of both good quality laughs and genuine scares vastly prevents it from becoming a worthy horror franchise or the type of horror comedy that the writers have gone for.

The sequel is currently in pre-production and title 2001 Maniacs: The Beverley Hellbillies. I for one wont be counting the days until that one hits our screens.

  • Some Shit Sherlock

I’ll look about a bit later, but I have been relaibly informed that Guy Ritchie left a meeting with studio bosses regarding Sherlock Holmes. He needs to reshoot a good (4 week) chunk of it.

    Ritchie’s not happy.

The Lock, Stock helmer is filming the movie in London, with Robert Downey Jr. playing the iconic detective and Jude Law taking on the role of the super sleuth’s sidekick Watson.

A source states, “It’s disastrous news, but Guy has promised to fix it.”

Ritchie is now allegedly battling to keep the project on track for its original November release date.

EDIT – Just been told this is in The Sun.

  • Worms

    Hello BRWC-ers

I’m just another of the recent influx of contributors of the site. Please allow me to introduce myself; I’m a man of wealth and taste. Well actually I’m not, but it’s nice to pretend.

I’m going to be writing regularly about whatever I think of when I sit down. At the moment I want to discuss the incredible film that is Tremors, but I’m going to re-watch it first before going on about it. Suffice to say it features Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon battling giant worms that shoot other worms out of their mouths. Think Jaws meets those sand monsters from Beetlejuice. Or that time the bigger boys at school forced you to eat worms and how you imagined their wormy brethren might be plotting a terrible, wriggly revenge. Need I say more? No.

EDIT – You mean FRED Ward. Burt Ward played Robin on the Batman TV series. Thanks to Nathan for the error spotting. All fixed.

  • Outlander

Outlander is similar to a night out in Newcastle. No one wants to go to Newcastle, you’re either from that tribe or you break down there. You have a different language to people there, it seems as if it’s in the past, and you have neater hair.

Maybe Newcastle doesn’t seem so bad when the locals seem to liven up after a pint , until your hassled by a beast who won’t leave you alone.

Can you ever bring yourself to leave Newcastle or does it hold its grasp over you like a black and white blanket?

    Outlander = Newcastle.

In a nutshell, Kainan, (Caviezel) crash lands on earth (Newcastle) in 709 AD bringing with him a Moorwen a Beast from another world.. Kainan’s crew are dead and he has unfortunately dropped his super high-tech Dragon Slaying gun into the river. Oh Shit.

He is captured by Vikings (Geordies) and taken to their village for questioning. After their camp is attacked and Kainan’s attempts to convince the tribe that this is a creature of death, the tribe go on a quest to seek revenge for those they have lost.

Completely plausible so far, I think It’s based on a true story…

However, This film is a cliché in many aspects of the production, Firstly you have Jimmy C who is a good actor with a weird choice in the roles he chooses. He’s been Jesus, God’s son, (one of many) I think he could be fussy from now on, but no, Dragon Slayer from a mystical planet it is.

The scenery is nicely shot and the acting isn’t overly bad, the process just all happens a little too quickly. Once villain to hero within about 2 days, from hero to king before the week’s done. It’s Howard McCain’s first feature film and unfortunately it still has the feel of a made for TV movie.

There is the typical love interest between the kings daughter Freya (Sophia Myles) and army leader Wulfric (Jack Huston) who looks the same as any dashing lead in these sci-fi adventure films, long (washed) hair with lovely teeth because maybe a monster won’t get everyone’s pulses racing.

The monster is nothing we haven’t really seen before, Alien shocked us, Jurassic Park bought childhood stories and picture book images to life. In 2009 I maybe expected a little more.

Have a gander if Eastenders or an interminable soap is on, otherwise have an early night.

    James.
