What Happened To Suzy? - Review

There is something immediately gripping about What Happened to Suzy?. It is the kind of mockumentary that pulls you in with the promise of answers and then keeps you hooked by refusing to give them too easily. Director James Ersted leans fully into the familiar rhythms of true crime storytelling, where a long‑buried cold case is cracked open by a determined relative. The setup is classic, but the execution is sharp, confident and surprisingly sinister.

At the centre of the story is Andy, played with a magnetic stillness by Dylan Nunez. His sister disappeared twenty five years ago, and although the year 2000 feels like another lifetime, Andy has never shaken the guilt that clings to the case. With no police support and no real leads, he decides to take matters into his own hands. He brings in filmmaker Don, played by Paul Parducci, along with Don’s assistant Cynthia, played by Kira Omans, to document his attempt to trace his sister’s final movements.

The only clue Andy has is a red, white and blue pinwheel found in a secret storage unit belonging to his uncle Richard. Richard is currently in a psychiatric ward for past crimes, which only deepens the sense of unease. As Andy follows the trail from Richard to a man named Frank, he finds himself caught in a web that grows more dangerous the deeper he goes.

Much of the film is spent watching Andy sift through boxes of documents from his uncle’s abandoned YouTube show. It is slow, deliberate work, but that is the point. Ersted understands the appeal of true crime and uses the genre’s pacing to keep the viewer leaning forward. Every moment feels intentional. Nunez never overplays a beat, and his restraint gives the film a grounded emotional core.

Visually, the film is crisp and controlled. Cinematographer Todd Kappelt maintains a polished look throughout, with occasional tech glitches that appear only when they serve the story. These distortions act as subtle signals, nudging the viewer toward the larger mystery. Each narrative clue falls neatly into place, building toward a finale that is twisty, surprising and satisfying.

What Happened to Suzy? may tread familiar ground, but that is part of its charm. Ersted knows the genre inside out and understands how to hold back just long enough before revealing the truth. When the final reveal arrives, it lands with real impact.
