The Electric State: Trailer Talk

The Electric State: Trailer Talk.

On top of sequels and remakes, adaptations are also a subgenre that the film industry is very familiar with. And, while there have been some great adaptations of books, there are also ones that completely miss the point of its source material.

‘The Electric State’ stars Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World) and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) as they search for her younger brother in a world where technology and androids have advanced past humanity’s capabilities.

This trailer is an example of the adaptation being so far apart from the source material that it’s the complete opposite of what its supposedly based off. The film is ‘based’ off a book by Simon Stålenhag, which is a slow-paced journey involving a girl and her droid as they travel through a dystopian world. The film, however, looks to be a fast-paced, action packed adventure featuring humour reminiscent of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. After loving the book, it’s such a shame to see what it’s become in film form. It seems that Stålenhag himself isn’t happy with the film either, as his name isn’t present in the trailer at all.

‘The Electric State’ has a great cast and is directed by The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame). However, its biggest issue is that it’s adapted from a source material that’s the complete opposite of this. If the film had been given a different title, thus separating itself from the book of the same name, I’m sure there would be less backlash. But, as it stands, if you’re going to watch the film, don’t purchase the book beforehand. But I’d also tell you to just read the book and ignore this film’s existence.

Megan’s taste in films are interesting: her favourite films are ‘Space Jam’, Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Cat Returns’, as well as horror films ‘Saw’, ‘Drag Me To Hell’ and ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’. When she’s not watching films, she’ll be spending precious hours playing ‘Crash Bandicoot’.
