Mufasa: The Lion King – Trailer Talk
Despite the remake of the beloved classic ‘The Lion King’ looking emotionless and stale, with nothing new to say, it was extremely successful at the box office. This inevitably means that a follow up film is to come but, instead of remaking ‘The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride’, Disney have decided to go backwards to tell an origin story.
‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ follows Simba as he takes his place as king of the Pridelands while the origins of his late father are explored.
To give Disney some credit, the visual effects look a lot better than its predecessor, with the characters having exaggerated facial expressions just like in the original film. This is a huge step up from the emotionless faces that were shown in ‘The Lion King’ remake and demonstrates that Disney were willing to listen to criticisms of the film. And, just from listening to the music featured in the trailer, I’m looking forward to how the soundtrack will be. If it’s just as incredible as the snippets revealed, then fans are in for a treat.
But all this gets pushed aside when the biggest question rears its head: what is the point in this film? Exploring the origins of Mufasa doesn’t sound very interesting and, because of ‘The Lion King 2’, Simba’s journey into becoming king has already been told. One scene in the trailer that does stand out is where Timone and Pumbaa are fighting alongside Mufasa or Simba. It’s unclear which character this is but, if it’s the former, then it could be implied that the film’s narrative will be told by these two characters, akin to ‘The Lion King 1 ½’. If this is the case, then that could be interesting. But that’s a big if.
Overall, ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ looks visually better than ‘The Lion King’ remake, but it does seem like a pointless film to make. Instead, Disney should’ve remade ‘The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride’ or focused on an origin story for Mufasa’s brother Scar, which would’ve been much more interesting.
