Marcel The Shell With Shoes On: Trailer Talk
Distribution company A24 have been a complete marvel to me: they have become the first distribution company to carry a sign of good quality when it comes to their filmography. This is purely because they choose to release truly unique films that other studios wouldn’t touch, thus giving them a well deserved platform for moviegoers (when is the UK getting ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’?!). And their next release is no exception: ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’.
‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ is the feature length adaptation of the 2010 short film, and is a stop motion/ live action film about an anthropomorphic shell with shoes and a googly eye.
Upon seeing the thumbnail for the trailer on YouTube, of Marcel, I was unsure. Initially I thought the design looked a little freakish. However, after seeing the trailer, I have completely changed my opinion. The film carries a documentary visual style as Marcel decides to find his family and search for others like him, and it looks very cute. Because of Marcel’s innocent and child-like nature, the film can easily bring out the emotional side of the plot too.
Stop motion/ live action hybrids aren’t a medium I’ve seen in a long time and so I welcome it with open arms. The film looks adorable and touching but, like A24’s other films, it’s also unique, especially concerning the quirky designs of Marcel and the stop motion characters. I hope this is another gem from the amazing distribution company.
