6/ PROMETHEUS. 2012. DIRECTED BY RIDLEY SCOTT.
You would not believe the hype this film got when it was announced. An Alien prequel that was to be directed by Ridley Scott. Sign me up! Prometheus follows a crew who are off to find the aliens that made the human race (well now it sounds stupid). Only to find that their makers were themselves killed. One has survived the slaughter, but sets out to complete his mission: to destroy the human race and to make way for the next species.
There is a lot of philosophy in Prometheus, and most of it is pretty unnecessary. For most people, myself included, we were expecting an Alien film. That really isn’t what we got. What we did get is amazingly well directed. The sets are among the best I have ever seen in any film ever made. The acting is top-notch. The characters are actually pretty interesting. The effects are also impressive. What we have is an ambitious film, one that pays off for its ambition. Or at least it would if it wasn’t for the writing…and oh, the writing. This is a film that perfectly displays how badly a poor script can screw an otherwise great film.
What could have been phenomenal became mediocre. And it is completely down to the script. It’s trying to be smart and deep, but only ends up being shallow and stupid. Like a black hole, the whole film is just imploded by the writing. It is a shame. I do actually recommend seeing Prometheus at least once. It deserves a viewing. But for a prequel that gives you the answers you wanted and more, this one is bit of a vacuum.
