7/ AVP, ALIEN VS PREDATOR. 2004. DIRECTED BY PAUL W.S. ANDERSON.
Paul W.S. Anderson is easily one of the worst directors working today. So, it baffles me that he got to direct one of the most anticipated sci-fi films of all time. AVP follows a group of scientists undergoing an expedition to a pyramid 300 feet below the Antarctic ice. The pyramid soon turns out to be a labyrinthine hunting ground for the predators. Who are here to take on their most dangerous prey; the aliens.
It’s strange how this film is in the middle of our two previous entries. It’s better made than Alien Resurrection and more fun than Predator 2. Yet it’s not as fun as Resurrection or as well-made as Predator 2. What we end up with is a film of ideas and moments. And a lot of tedium in-between. The acting is horrible. Everyone (including series veteran Lance Henrikson) just seem bored. The predators are looking their worst in this film too. Not to mention they are taken out way too easily. I’m also not a fan of the predator becoming a good-guy near the end. But, the aliens look great, the sets are really impressive and there are some good ideas and fun to be had.
When the two species go toe-to-toe it’s more than worth the price of admission. Plus, the pyramid setting does deliver some great and memorable moments. But the film as a whole is a misdirected mess. I don’t think it’s deserving of the slaughter it received. But it’s still not good. You can definitely enjoy this one with the right mindset. Just know that it will only be as a guilty pleasure. I’d only really recommend it if you like those Resident Evil films. I don’t, so I’m not a fan.
