New research by comparethemarket.com has today revealed the best and worst car films of all time. Despite being almost 50 years old, the Michael Caine classic, The Italian Job (1969) has secured the top spot of being named the ‘best car film ever made’ with 32% of votes.  However, the 2003 remake starring Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron failed to make the grade and was named one of the worst driving films to watch, with 15% naming it ‘worst car film ever’.

Film buffs may think that it is high-octane car chases that keep viewers glued to the cinema screen, but for one fifth of Brits (20%) the most memorable car moment is not a gear shifting, high speeding pursuit, but a rousing rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne’s World (1992). For a dark humoured 13%, the best moment involving a car is the fatal shooting of Marvin in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994). 23% of women cite the race between the T-Birds and the Scorpions in Grease (1978) as their most memorable moment.

The most iconic car from a film is James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger (1964) with 35%, closely followed by the Delorean from Back to the Future (1985) with 20% of the vote. Herbie in Lovebug (1968), was voted more iconic than the new Batmobile in the Dark Knight (2008) Batman classic, proving it is not always the size of the engine that matters. However, it’s the humble Mini that takes the lead when it comes to car chases. The Italian Job (1969) and Bourne Identity (2002) were named as the top two car chases ever in a film receiving almost half the total vote combined (45%), which both feature Mini’s traversing the back streets of Europe.

Thelma and Louise (1991) feature in the top five favourite car films to watch, receiving 50% more votes from women than men (with nearly 14% of women voting for it compared to just 5% of men). The Fast and the Furious (2001) and Speed (1994) also scored highly with women (16%), while men prefer the Hollywood car classics, with Bullitt staring Steve McQueen coming second and The Gumball Rally scoring third.

The findings by comparethemarket.com mark the latest Meerkat Movies advert which sees Aleksandr and Sergei in their own dramatic car scene, having to keep the speed dial at 49.3 miles per hour in order to make it to the cinema on time. Dan Bass, Head of Car Insurance from comparethemarket.com said: “The Italian Job was voted best and worst film at the same time, which goes to show just how sacred a classic film can be to its audience. The remake didn’t rev everyone’s engine but car films will have always have a place in movies. We think the best place to see them in all their glory is at the cinema, preferably with a friend.”
