We had a quick chat with the guys too –

So what is SyncSmith?

Essentially we are a sync agency that supports the TV, Film, Gaming and Creative Advertising industries, our aim is to remove the burden from the film directors, trailer producers and music supervisors, but we’re slightly left-of-centre in that we provide an unparalleled conduit into the lesser known pockets of experimental and avant-garde electronica.

How is the licensing business going?

It’s healthy, we’ve only just started up around two months ago but the briefs and discussions we’ve held so far are really positive. I think for a while its been difficult from those outside the electronic industry to approach as it can often feel a little hostile and out of reach but were here to bridge that linguistical gap and connect the two worlds.

What makes music and film interesting for you?

Without heading into cliche territory I’m a big fan of how a score can enhance specific moments without detracting from the aesthetic or onscreen content, I’m a big fan of the more delicate intense moments where tact and restraint are key to achieving balance and complete immersion.

How do you go about finding new artists?  Do they come to you?

We’re getting quite a lot of artists approaching now that we’ve formally launched, but our doors are firmly closed at the moment, thats not to say we won’t take on anymore in the future but I wouldn’t want to spread false hopes or more importantly water down how much effort I can put into the current roster. I’ve ran a label for over 4 years plus my business partner Kate Gibbons was at The Wire Magazine for about 5 years so we both knew instantly which labels and artists we wanted on board and there’s still a few surprises left to come.

Great FiLMiX by the way.  Can you talk about the process?  How did you select the tracks, decide on a theme?

Thank you, the process was fairly easy in that when we onboard artists we allow them to select from their back-catalogue their most sync-able tracks and generally these are featured on our website, we’ve used these tracks for the mix as they’re a great way to understand the very best that our artists have to offer and hopefully influences the listener to investigate further. No direct theme as such though just 30mins of hissing romanticism, granular synthesis and emotive soundscapes from the likes of Karen Gwyer, Beatrice Dillon, Hieroglyphic Being, Killawatt, ASC and Joe Farr

And why did you choose The Lost Boys as your film?  Are you a fan?

Why not, its a solid cult film that deserves noteriarty, I’ve been a big fan since a little boy, I think it was the dog Nanook that pulled me in from the start, oh and the god-awful power jazz scene with the beefcake on sax, “I Still Believe”, haha, gets me every time!!

Always talk of a Lost Boys reboot, do you approve?  Are you fan of remakes, reboots, spinoffs, prequels, etc.?

Totally as long as they’ve got their own personality and they get the casting, score and plot in tune. I think sometimes people tend to be too sympathetic to the original when actually the original stood alone because it was so compellingly strong and full of character, for me the remake or follow-up needs to take that same stance.

What films are you into?  What are your favourites?

I’m a sucker for a thriller or something that consistently twists and turns, obviously anything by The Coen Brothers, plus I’ve recently enjoyed Interstellar and Ex-Machina

Anything coming up in the future?

Couple of bits here and there but nothing I can disclose at this point unfortunately, we are working on a lookbook which will be quite unique to this industry, my partner works in the fashion world where it is common place so were applying that, key individuals should be receiving a well designed opus for their desks shortly.

These will be limited to 100 only as they are for our key clients but if anyone would like to reserve one upfront I can offer two for BRWC readers.

All requests please send to gavin@syncsmith.com
