There are few tech companies in the world as diversified as Sony. They make movies, televisions, gaming consoles, phones, tablets, cameras, software and more. With E3 2015 in the books and the latest tech on the table, let’s look at some of the best from Sony over the past year as well as what we can expect to see in the future.
SmartBand Talk and SmartWatch 3
While Apple is enjoying its success with the Apple Watch, several other companies have created their own smartwatches running an Android platform, including Sony. Two noteworthy wearables to hit the market this year are the SmartBand Talk and the SmartWatch 3.
The SmartBand Talk features a thin band with a curved e-ink display that shows information ranging from call logs to fitness activity (such as total steps for the day using the band’s accelerometer). Although the band can connect to a smartphone to send and receive calls, the fitness tracking is the SmartBand Talk’s biggest selling point.
The SmartWatch 3, powered by Android Wear, directly competes with the Apple Watch and is one of the most powerful and feature-rich smartwatches on the market. A notable differentiator between the SmartWatch 3 and the Apple Watch is that Sony’s version features 4GB of local storage so you can sync playlists and other media without needing a direct connection to your smartphone (Apple Watch requires a connection with the iPhone).
Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
There are dozens of Android tablets on the market, and, at first glance, the Sony Xperia Z3 blends in with the lineup. However, when you pick one up, you immediately notice how thin and light it feels. In fact, it is currently the thinnest and lightest compact tablet on the market. But Sony’s biggest selling point is that the Z3 is completely waterproof, making it unlike almost every other Android tablet out there.
Xperia Z Series
Tablets aren’t the only waterproof Android devices from Sony this year. The Z series of Xperia smartphones are light, slim and durable. And, just like the tablet above, they also share its waterproof abilities. Xperia phones are known for their long-lasting batteries and simplistic design. This is the phone you want if you’re known to be more accident prone.
Sony Roxy
Fitness tracking wearables are a hot item in 2015, and the Sony Roxy is a stylish take on the competition. It’s waterproof up to three meters, and the built-in accelerometer tracks steps and calories burned throughout the day. If you connect with an Android phone, the Roxy can play, pause and skip tracks on your Walkman App.
Cyber-shot DSC-RX1
Today’s smartphone cameras are so sophisticated that the average consumer no longer owns a point-and-shoot camera. But, there will always be a market for people who want to take incredible pictures, and Sony knows how to make high-quality cameras and lenses. The DSC-RX1 is one of the best point-and-shoot cameras on the market, mostly thanks to its Carl Zeiss lens that captures vivid photos in nearly any light. It doesn’t have the speed and optics of a DSLR, but it’s still top notch compared to any point-and-shoot out there.
