When his strong willed and overbearing girlfriend meets her untimely demise, Max starts to pull his life back together and falls for a girl with similar tastes. Unfortunately, just as his grieving stops and loving starts he finds his dead ex is a little harder to get rid of than you’d usually expect.
Have you seen Life After Beth? because this has pretty much the same premise only without the sweetness or the wit. That’s not to say that Life After Beth was overly funny, only that Burying the Ex feels like a tired format, bereft of originality. There’s nothing outrageous to warrant any belly laughs and nowhere near enough goopy gore or whacky body horror to give it any Zombie credence.
Anton Yelchin and Oliver Cooper do a great job with what little they have, while Ashley Greene and Alexandra Daddario fair worse as Max’s suitors. The former not being undead enough and the latter trying to channel a level of chipper kookiness last seen radiating from Julia Roberts’ ever beaming face.
Burying The Ex isn’t a bad movie but it is hugely disappointing to see such a renowned director reduced to such a low budget and worn concept. The cameo from Dick Miller raised a smile but this is far removed from Gremlins, The Burbs, The Howling and Innerspace.
Burying The Ex is available in the UK from June 19th
