Playing It Cool: Review

By Josh Horwood

Directed by Justin Reardon, 94mins

Playing it Cool tells the story of Chris Evans, a writer who wants to write action movies but is enlisted instead to pen a romantic comedy.  The problem?  He’s never known what true love.  That is, until he meets Michelle Monaghan…

Reardon injects a little fun into some scenes as writer Evans imagines himself as different types of heroes for his script.  Unfortunately, our script, written by Schafer and Vicknair, doesn’t really cover any new ground.  We see the same collection of stock characters philosophising about love and what women really want.  Topher Grace and Anthony Mackie are charismatic screen presences but aren’t really given all that much to do.  It falls to Monaghan and Evans to carry the film, with their charming performances.

Ultimately, this movie isn’t sparky or self aware enough to rise above its cliché-ridden script.  Performances are fun but it feels as though something is lacking.  The film’s title would be more appropriate were it called playing it safe.
