This Is The End

By Peter Killip.

When I exited the cinema from this, I had the image of Seth and his mates in some kind of Improv All-Star comedic reach-around during the writing of this script. Written and directed by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, this none more meta apocalyptic comedy feels like the cinematic equivalent of meeting up with mates who are all blasted off their tits and You’re clean and sober cause You’ve got work in the morning. Ultimately, something of a frustrating exercise in futility. Jay Baruchel (playing himself) is picked up from the airport by friend Seth Rogen (also playing himself) and after getting stoned (see, they’re already at it!) decide to go to a party at James Franco’s (also pla….fuck it, everyone is playing themselves ok?) house, after Rhianna starts singing a song about panties (yeah, it’s one of those fucking parties, like the one in the black eyed peas video for I got a feeling, I’d be looking for a side door to fuck off out of. Sorry.) suddenly
the earth opens up and it gets all Fire and Brimstone as everyone starts getting offed.

Frankly, I was relieved, it was all getting far too smug, at least Tropic Thunder had the decency to mock the industry and the characters, this is all way too self congratulatory. Danny McBride, fantastic in Eastbound And Down, manages to outstay his welcome by a good 90% of his alotted screen time, come to think of it, pretty much EVERYBODY comes off with the shit-end of the stick in that department, well except Michael Cera, the man knows how to make an exit. A lot like “Pineapple Express” the premise delivers if you can hack the ad-libbing style of ultra lowbrow comedy, maybe the comedic reach-around thing was harsh but it just felt like it was going nowhere, like that snake eating it’s own tail thing, but with Seth Rogen sucking his own cock.
