By Daryl Bär

Taking place at a pivotal time in a man’s life, Noor makes the choice to assign himself to the male gender and find a woman who will love him for the person he has become, having spent a portion of his life among the Khusras following chemical castration.

This is a road movie with a purpose, a journey of discovery where the destination is merely hope. Here cultural diversity and seemingly candid conversation alleviate the burden of plot contrivance and unnatural sounding interaction. The performances have a sincerity which works well with the realistic and almost documentary feel from Guillaume Giovanetti and Cagla Zencirci.

As the picture progresses, Noor’s truck journey across Pakistan drinks in a great many serene landscapes that are a great contrast to the life he leaves behind. My one concern is that despite the intriguing story of a man’s search for belonging Noor is a little simplistic in its resolution. Or perhaps it’s just that I wanted to spend more time with this character and see what lay further down the road.
