Adapted from his early short “Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man With The Plan”, with the help of “WWE Films” (and shudder as I type that fact), director Mike Flanagan goes bigger in budget if not exactly in scope. The good Doctor’s loss is the Big Screen’s gain as told through parallel narratives we get a convincingly troubled turn from Karen Gillian as the haunted daughter of parents (superb Katee Sakhoff and Rory Cochrane) who fell under the spell of a possessed mirror in their family home and attempt to unearth its secrets. You read that correctly, a possessed bloody mirror.
Here-in lies the problem, what works brilliantly in a creepy 32 minute short can feel somewhat stretched out and laboured when running at feature length. There are only so many “Don’t believe what you see” type mirror related shocks you can sit through before the Asian Extreme style High Concept begins out staying it’s welcome.
Taken at face value, on reflection ( completely worth it, shut your hole.) it’s a worthwhile venture that although far from flawless, is well worth looking into (okay, I’ll apologise for that one.).
