Interview: Doug Spearman – The Shoot

film reviews | movies | features | BRWC Interview: Doug Spearman – The Shoot

Doug Spearman (Cradle 2 the Grave) is part of John Adams and Tobey Poser’s anticipated new production, The Shoot. We spoke to Spearman about working with the husband-wife filmmaking team, how he’d pitch the film, and his favorite action-thriller of all time (clue : it features a submarine!)

How were you pitched The Shoot

A really good friend of mine, Lori Prescious, who’s a director and a friend of John and Toby’s suggested me for the project. She thought we’d hit it off and we did.

Right off the bat, how did you get involved?

As soon as Toby and John sent me the script I read it and I loved it. They also gave me a choice of roles to play and I LOVE that. It’s a really freeing feeling for an actor to have some say in what he/she wants to play. Right away I liked Dave because he was so low- key.

Were you familiar with Wonder Wheel Productions and how they worked?

Not till I read the script, then I had a meeting with them and they gave me there first two films to watch. I was blown away by their artistry and their ability to tell a story with a lot of heart in it. Plus John is a fantastic photographer.

Tell us something about how John and Toby worked differently to other filmmakers you’ve worked with.

That’s funny. I’ve never, ever had as much fun working on a movie before. Not even one of my own. Their energy, enthusiasm. And just the warmth of working in a family atmosphere made all the actors pull together in a way that I’ve never seen before. We had no trailers, no perks, no nothing, but we had each other and the beautiful locations and we just grooved. It was a dream.

The film is a mix of genres. How have you described it to others?

To me, it’s a caper story with a love story wrapped around it. It’s as 21st Century Raising Arizona.

Have you seen the film with an audience? What was the reaction?

I haven’t seen the full film yet. I did see a couple of my scenes and I can tell you it’s the first time I actually liked watching myself work.

Did you participate in any extras for the inevitable DVD release?

I can only imagine what’s on the gag reel.

What’s your favorite action-thriller of all time?

Ohhh. That’s a tough one. The Hunt For Red October, is always my go-to.
