*CONTAINS SPOILERS*

HBO’s Game of Thrones has definitely won the appreciation and undivided attention of both critics and audiences worldwide. With its lavish sets, remarkable dialogue and extraordinary cast, the 16-time Emmy winner continues to fascinate us with every new episode. However, while the actors do a brilliant job bringing to life Westeros’ blood-hungry inhabitants, it is their unique fighting tools and deadly venoms that often take centre stage, employing a character of their own.

With the release of Season 4 available digitally from 17 June, we take a look at some of Game of Thrones’ most prominent weaponry:

ICE

Arguably one of the most symbolic pieces of armament in the series, Ice is a Valyrian steel greatsword and an heirloom of House Stark. Due to the unique material used for its creation, Ice is incredibly sharp and exceptionally strong. After playing a vital role in the death of one of the show’s leading characters, Ned Stark, Ice is melted down following an order by Tywin Lannister at the beginning of Season 4. Its steel is then used to make a new sword for Jaime Lannister, which is later named Oathkeeper. The remaining Valyrian steel is transformed into a blade given to King Joffrey Baratheon who names it Widow’s Wail.

NEEDLE
Unlike the big heavy weaponry featured repeatedly throughout the series, Needle is a thin sword wielded by Arya Stark. Entrusted to her by Jon Snow at the beginning of Season 1, Needle is the perfect fit for Arya’s petite figure. Even though it cannot penetrate armour, Needle provides Arya with the advantage of improved speed and agility over her opponents. After mastering the craft of Water Dance, the Braavosi swordfighting style, Arya relies on Needle as her main means of self-defence, including protection from Rorge who has threatened to take her virginity and her life.

LONGCLAW

Similarly to Ice, Longclaw is a Valyrian steel sword and an heirloom of House Mormont. Filed under the category of bastard swords, Longclaw is longer than a longsword, but shorter than a greatsword, allowing his handler to use it either with one or two hands. The sword was passed back and forth between Lord Jeor Mormont and his son Jorah until Jeor gave it to Jon Snow as a reward for saving his life from a white walker. Most recently, Jon Snow used Longclaw in combat at the Raid on Craster’s Keep in Season 4.

DRAGONGLASS SPEAR

After hearing only a brief mention about it during the first season, Game of Thrones fans were finally introduced to this very rare tool after it was discovered by Grenn, Dolorous Edd and Sam in Season 2. Made of a volcanic glass substance known as obsidian, a dragonglass spear is the only weapon capable of killing White Walkers, turning them to ice and shattering them to pieces.

WILDFIRE

Created and distributed by an ancient society known as The Alchemists’ Guild, Wildfire is a highly volatile material that can cause massive explosions. It is impossible to extinguish it using water as it only responds to large quantities of sand. Also known as “the substance” or “pyromancer’s P***,” Wildfire burns with distinctive green flames. Most notably, Wildfire played a pivotal role in the Battle of the Blackwater where it led to a succession of immense explosions, taking the lives of thousands of sailors and soldiers.

THE STRANGLER

The Strangler is a rare but extremely lethal poison which, as its name suggests, causes a person’s throat to swell shut. The Strangler comes in the form of amethyst-coloured crystals that are easily dissolved in water or other liquids. In addition to closing the throat, the poison also causes excessive bleeding through the eyes, mouth and pores. Most recently, The Strangler was used to assassinate King Joffrey Baratheon during his wedding to Margaery in the second episode of Season 4.

TEARS OF LYS

Tears of Lys is the name given to one of the deadliest and most sinister poisons in the Game of Thrones universe. Without colour, smell or taste, Tears of Lys is impossible to detect by a potential victim. It was revealed in Season 4 that Lysa Arryn used the poison to murder her husband Jon Arryn by dropping a few “tears” into his wine.
