Once upon a time, movies that focused on paranormal activity used to only be released around Halloween, but with our seemingly endless appetite and fascination for the supernatural world, every year is now punctuated throughout with the release of paranormal blockbusters.

Here’s a line-up of the most eagerly anticipated paranormal movies of 2014.

Paranormal Activity 5

Released in January, this is not actually the fifth in the PA series. Instead it’s a spin-off from the franchise. The official name is Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and stars Jorge Diaz, Andrew Jacobs, Gabrielle Walsh and Renee Victor.

The story follows what happens to Jesse, a teen in Oxnard, California, who decides to start investigating his neighbour’s death. He then discovers that he has been marked for possession by a demonic spirit whose power he cannot resist.

The Purge: Anarchy

This film’s also a sequel, this time to The Purge, which was released in 2013. It stars Frank Grillo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez, Billy Parker and Michael K Williams. It was written and directed by James De Monaco and is due to be released in July.

During a night when all crime is legal and all the emergency services and hospitals are shut down for a 12 hour period, a couple are on their way to their children when their car runs out of fuel, at the same time as the Purge begins. Under attack, they escape on motorcycles. Elsewhere in the city, a man roams the streets to avenge his murdered son and a mother and daughter flee their home after it is destroyed. All five characters meet during the night and do what they can to survive the night in LA’s Purge.

Deliver Us From Evil

This paranormal film is a follow-up, too. It seems we can’t get enough of movies about the supernatural and even more so, series of those movies! Due to be released in July, Deliver Us From Evil is the sequel to Scott Derrickson’s Sinister and stars Olivia Munn, Eric Bana, Joel McHale, Edgar Ramirez and Sean Harris.

A NY cop, Ralph Sarchie (Bana) is investigating a series of crimes and to solve them joins forces with an unorthodox priest (Ramirez). The priest’s knowledge of exorcism rituals is the key to fighting the spiritual possessions that are plaguing the city.

Dracula Untold

With a scheduled release for August 2014, this is the story of how the first vampire comes into being when a young prince has to risk his soul to save his young wife and child from a blood-crazed sultan. It’s a mix of vampire myth and the true story of Prince Vlad the Impaler, which borrows from Dracula, the Bram Stoker novel. Directed by Gary Shore this film’s stars include Luke Evans, Sarah Gaddon, Dominic Cooper and Samantha Barks.
