This colourful tale of friendship is a heartwarming and refreshing look at being unique. A film from Eytan Foxs, it follows a diverse group of neighbours in modern day Israel.
The film opens with the group gathering to watch the immensely popular Eurovision-esque television show ‘Unisong’. Whilst watching, their friend Anat discloses that her husband has recently left her, and to cheer her up, they compose a song. Ofer, one of the neighbours, films the song and secretly sends it off to the Unisong organisers, and there is surprise and horror when the rest of the gang hear they have been selected to represent Israel the following year.
The friendship group is unlikely but somehow works as an excellent basis for the film; there is a politician, an ex-beauty queen turned lawyer, a baker, a lesbian musician, a blogger, and the sole male of the group, Ofer, who is a homosexual kindergarten teacher. As being in the limelight and the pressure of expectation start to affect them, they find solidarity in each other. The film explores many subjects but the overwhelming theme of the film is being true to yourself despite adversity, and the importance of friendship.
The film is a vibrant and fun adventure, packed full of colour, with every character being defined by a different hue. The film is in hebrew with english subtitles, which only adds to the quirky style of the film.
This is the second film I have seen from Peccadillo Pictures, and I regret that I was underwhelmed by my first experience. In contrast, this film I am glad to have seen. It has a strong character to it, although not perfect, has a clearer vision of where it is going. A much more complex look at life, despite the trivial subject matter. A charming film, you can’t really go wrong with this one.
