When I think of my secondary school, I think of fumbling through awkward social situations, being forced to exercise against my will, and the constant threat of a career at McDonald’s. Thanks to an array of american high school movies that have become part of a well-developed and mainstream genre of film, I now know that the only thing that matters in american high school is, of course, popularity.
Queue G.B.F. (gay best friends) a film that follows the difficulties of Tanner (Willett) when he is outed to the school as being the first openly gay student. Chaos ensues when the three most popular girls in school decide that he is the latest must-have fashion accessory, and start competing for his friendship.
This film will probably disappear into this over-populated genre without so much as glimpse at the success of some of it’s renowned predecessors, but the satirical perspective of the film is quite refreshing. However, it has the over-characterisation which you’d expect in this kind of comedy, and the story line is completely predictable. Dressing room montage, check. Bitchy cat fights, check. Happy ending, check. The familiar cast is also reassuring, american television has been pillaged, expect to see familiar faces from Pretty Little Liars, Desperate Housewives, The Mindy Project, Will and Grace, and Orange is the New Black. The film feels like its aimed for a young teenage audience, but it has an R rating, which seems a little over cautious when there is nothing outrageously risqué in this film.
This film doesn’t break any boundaries but if you are a super fan of the high school movie, you’ll enjoy this feel good film, and no doubt you’ll understand when I say there is a cheeky cameo from JoJo, which is an absolute treat.
