A new movie, called “The Book Thief”, is going to show us the extraordinary daily reality about what was really going on in ordinary people’s life, during the Second World War, in the Nazi Germany.
Based on a book with the same name, this film tells a story of a very brave girl, named Liesel. Her parents were communists and they were not the people who supported the Nazi, and that was the reason why she became an orphan. Her brother died and at his funeral she stole a book, that turn into the only touch she had with him.
Being adopted by a family, who lived in a relatively poor town, in Germany, Liesel finds out that they hide a young Jewish guy, named Max. At a Nazi burning book event, she steals another book, without even being able to read it, because she is illiterate. The lack of education she has is mistaken with the lack of intelligence, by the other kids in her new school. But Liesel is a smart girl and together with her new father she learns how to read.
The books she has stolen are now a connection between her and Max. They develop a brother-sister relationship based on the love for words. She basically saves his mind and keeps his spirit flawless by discovering the power of the books.
The name of her new dad is Hans, played by the very talented Geoffrey Rush this role brings a manly kindness to the movie. His wife, Rosa, played by the amazing Emily Watson, is a very complex character. We get to see 2 different sides of her, being a cold and at the same time a loving and a kind mother.
In The Book Thief, Sophie Nelisse, who plays Liesel, brings a fresh light to the horror times and that makes this movie different from other war dramas. We get to see this character, as being a fragile and at the same time a courageous girl with hope sparks in her eyes. The amazing cast, the absolutely overwhelming story and a great directing make The Book Thief a really special and unique war film. This January, the brilliant movie is going to premiere in theatres, do not miss the chance to meet Liesel and experience her adventure.
