The Movie Buff’s Dream Vacation: 4 Filming Locations Worth Visiting
Looking for a new way to spice up your vacation plans? If you’re a movie buff, your greatest opportunity lies in the countless filming locations that have graced the silver screen over the past century. From the Wisconsin Dells to the Austrian Alps and even the Hawaiian island of Kauai, there exists a filming location perfect for every travel enthusiast.
The Sound Of Music
There’s only so much you can recreate with a Hollywood set — the majestic Alps certainly do not fall under this umbrella. Thus, when Julie Andrews sang such hits as “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss,” she did so right on the edge of the Austrian Alps. Half a century later, Salzburg’s official website says that millions of visitors make a point of checking out the filming location, which remains every bit as beautiful as it did when first graced by Andrews’ presence. If you’re a fan of this classic musical, be sure to stop by Mirabell Gardens (the backdrop for “Do-Re-Mi”) and the Benedictine Convent (where the nuns sang “Maria”).
Jurassic Park
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to catch the beloved dinosaurs seen in the ’90s favorite “Jurassic Park.” But you can check out several of the filming locations, and imagine how much more terrifying they’d be if you were chased by a ferocious T Rex. Multiple locations for “Jurassic Park” (and its sequels) were filmed on the island of Kauai, including the Napali Coast and the National Tropic Botanical Garden’s Allerton Gardens. Kauai also boasts the movie’s Manawaiopuna Falls, which, unfortunately, can only be witnessed by air tour. Still, even without direct access to the waterfalls, there’s plenty to keep the biggest “Jurassic Park” geek entertained during a visit to Hawaiian paradise.
Public Enemies
The biggest Depression Era gangsters lived out their most famous atrocities in the Midwest. The 2009 film “Public Enemies” followed the hijinks of such big names as John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd, both of whom spent a great deal of time robbing banks and causing mayhem in the state of Wisconsin. And so, film crews found themselves in the heart of the Packer state, near the waterpark capital better known as Wisconsin Dells. This onsite filming ultimately added to the authentic feel that so deftly captured audience interest.
No Country For Old Men
The little town of Marfa, Texas, boasts a truly impressive movie filming resume, having served as the backdrop for such hits as “There Will Be Blood” and the James Dean classic “Giants.” But as NPR points out, the town’s most recent accomplishment involved the filming of Coen Brothers gem “No Country For Old Men.” Based on a Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, this film explored the twists and turns of a deadly hunt for a deranged killer with a unique moral code. The town’s film-worthy scenery continues to attract plenty of movie buff tourists, many of whom enjoy checking out the Ryan Ranch, better known as the site of many a classic Western (and modern movie thriller) showdown.
