Hollywood loves a sporting biopic and, with so many saturating the market, it is hard to keep track of them all. With the start to the NBA season quickly approaching, here’s a list of some of the best basketball movies:
Coach Carter
Inspired by a true story, this emotive drama features Samuel L. Jackson at his best, portraying coach Ken Carter as he tries to teach his players that academic work is just as important as winning basketball games.
This heart-felt story sees Coach Carter drop his undefeated basketball team due to their below-par academic results. The Richmond High team learn the importance of school and many go onto win athletic scholarships despite losing in the final.
Space Jam
This family favourite sees basketball legend, Michael Jordan, enter the crazy world of the Looney Tunes. Jordan, who inspired the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles, has to inspire the Looney Tunes to victory over the dastardly Nerdlucks in order to stop the Looney Tunes becoming captives at Moron Mountain.
With odds of 10/1 with betfair to win the NBA, the Bulls must wish they still had Jordan playing for them.
Like Mike
This children film stars a young Bow Wow and features a whole host of NBA stars such as Steve Nash. The main character, Calvin, finds a pair of discarded basketball shoes with the initials MJ inscribed inside; these shoes gives the youngster unprecedented basketball ability and he ends up signing for the fictional LA Knights.
Steve Nash could do with a pair of these magic trainers as his team, the LA Lakers, are an unfancied 25/1 to win the NBA with bookmakers, Betfair.
White Men Can’t Jump
This quintessential basketball film stars a young Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes. The duo are a pair of basketball hustlers that are trying to make it to the top with hilarious consequences. With plenty of basketball talk and action, this film is a firm favourite with basketball fans.
