Although the heat wave has clearly taken its leave now, Londoners will continue to cling to the summer, until it has unequivocally slipped away and they can no longer convince themselves they’re best off in a pair of shorts and a vest top. So although we’re in a cooling period, there’s certainly still many ways to enjoy the final moments of what has been a scorching summer.
If you want to spend the close of the season doing something a little unorthodox, instead of sitting in the same old beer gardens and walking in the same old parks, we have a handful of suggestions.
iTunes Festival
The iTunes Festival offers 30 days of free music. How does this work? Sign up to iTunes if you don’t already have an account and then take your pick of the variety of artists that are going to be playing in London over the next month including Queens of the Stone Age, Drenge, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Pixies and many, many more. If you don’t win tickets, you’ll still be able to stream the gigs live!
Catch up with a Film
You could always review the new films on at Cineworld Cinemas. Now that the blockbuster season is coming to an end, some of the more obscure and interesting films of the year are starting to surface.
Explore Ocean Wildlife
The Horniman Museum has knocked it out of the park again with an exquisite new photography exhibition by Jamie Cragg, which evokes the very same sense of wonder you would feel seeing marine creatures in real life.
Columbia Road Flower Market
This is a curiously hidden gem on Columbia Road (as the name suggests) in the East End London. If the sun is out, this market is a gorgeous place to be. As well as all the flowers, you can expect street buskers, coffee and cake, samosas and bizarre vintage shops that sell furniture, clothes and jewellery.
Klezmer in the Park
If you’re interested in sampling some traditional Jewish food and music, head north towards the annual festival of klezmer and Sephardi music in Regent’s Park. There will also be exhibitions of Jewish culture, family activities, kosher food and all kinds of crafts for sale.
The Alternative London Tour
Having done London’s official bus tour plenty of times, you’re probably looking for a different look at the place this time around. East London’s alternative side is showcased for visitors on this tour, including Brick Lane and areas in Shoreditch with all the street art in between.
Poster Art 150
The London Transport Museum is hosting a very special exhibition, cataloguing over 150 years’ worth of underground station poster art. It’s an absolute must-see for both visitors and locals alike. You’ll be very surprised at the sheer scale and scope of the art on show.
