A few years back I went on a quest to watch a host of films revered for their terribleness. One such film was The Killer Shrews. Fun as it was it was definitely a bad film. But along with it in a 2 for 1 DVD package a Roger Corman “classic”. The title alone jumped out to me as the name of the bar from the infamous song Stackerlee or Stagger Lee or Stackolee.
Starring Joe Dante favourite Dick Miller as Walter, a busboy in a bohemian, hipster cafe. Looking up to the artists who pass through the cafe Walter wants to be up on stage like them and get all the kudos that goes along with being “deep”. After a crime of passion also known as murder Walter hides the body in a cast which he paints over. He then announces that he has made a statue. Soon Walter becomes the toast of the scene coming up with more inventive statues, which also means that more people are mysteriously going missing.
Being directed by the legendary Roger Corman you can probably guess that the acting is average to lousy, sets are cheap and the plot doesn’t stretch too far- the film last a little over an hour. Beneath it’s murderous horror exterior a satirical streak runs throughout the film. Taking swipes at the culture of the bohemians and beatniks. The age of old question of what is art is explored as these minor celebrity, intellectuals decide what is and what is not “the latest thing”. Most of the best horrors have a defining point to make and whilst A Bucket of Blood may not be among the best it certainly is a little known delight.
