Quote Of The Week : The Thing (1982)

“I know I’m human. And if you were all these things, then you’d just attack me right now, so some of you are still human. This thing doesn’t want to show itself, it wants to hide inside an imitation. It’ll fight if it has to, but it’s vulnerable out in the open. If it takes us over, then it has no more enemies, nobody left to kill it. And then it’s won.”

R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) telling his thoughts to the men who remain after an alien life form is taking them over one by one, in John Carpenter’s iconic horror film set in the Antarctic. Paranoia raised to the highest level.

I think the quote from the film that sums up ‘The Thing’ the best is:

    “You gotta be fucking kidding.”

‘The Thing’ is an absolute masterpiece, probably John Carpenter’s best film, maybe even Kurt Russell’s too. It was part of an incredible trilogy of Russell/Carpenter collaborations, each extremely different films; ‘Escape From New York’ and ‘Big Trouble in Little China’, all three I adore.

Shame Carpenter hasn’t made a good film in 10 years.

So, the Norwegians find it, and they dig it out of the ice…

Haha ! Yes, good choice Owain and its the way he says it too.. But i might have a better one for you :

Garry: “I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I’d rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH !”

Lol – a light hearted moment, in one of the most intense scenes of paranoia ever seen on film. Carpenters finest, followed closely by Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog.. Why cant he make films like this anymore ?! And if you havnt seen Kurt in Dark Blue (2002) then this is a must see.

Ah Trevor that is a fantastic line! I love that scene, one of the most brilliant scenes in cinema history, even though I know the outcome it’s still unbearably tense and it still makes me jump when he tests the blood and… Bingo!

That’s testament to Carpenter’s genius that he can punctuate a seen of such nail-biting fear with such a hilarious moment – made all the more funny by its contrast – and instantly switch the tension back on once the laughters over.

Dark Blue is a film I completely forgot about, it’s one of those ones I remember reading about keenly when it came out, but then it slipped me by. Thanks for reminding me, must get around to watching it, and Breakdown!
