Not sure if this is old or new news? but I heard about on the E! News today and thought it might interest some people.
If you are a fan of Mission Impossible you will be pleased to hear that a 4th film is being made and all the rumours seem to state that it will be co-produced by JJ Abrams and Tom Cruise and Tom will star again. Greenlit for a 2011 release if possible, I’m sure fans of the Cruise will be happy he will be hitting the screens again as Ethan Hunt.
what are your thoughts on Tom Cruise taking on this role again?

I’m quite pleased by this news, I hope they get an interesting director for the job, as what I’ve appreciated (if not always enjoyed) about the three Mission films thus far is the different styles the new directors have brought.
DePalma’s Mission, which I re-watched last night by chance, is a perfect summer thriller. The script is air-tight (though people said it was complicated, I think those people are silly) and the set-pieces are gloriously executed, and the film doesn’t over stuff itself with spectacle, wrining out the tension nicely and building towards one of my all-time favourite finales; the train sequence.
John Woo’s Mission is a complete mess, the plot is awful, its played too knowingly, and Woo’s style doesn’t gel with the story and Thandie Newton is terrible as the love interest and Dougray Scott bland as the villain. The only good thing to come from this film is the spoof doc with Ben Stiller as Tom Cruise’s stunt double Tom Crooze, a definite pre-cursor of their Tropic Thunder work.
Abrams Mission is the closest to the show – whilst still show-casing Cruise – it brings in more teamplay and is just a great popcorn ride, which Abrams showed he could accomplish again with skill with Star Trek. It’s full of great spectacle, a good narrative, enough character moments to invest the audience and a nice dose of humour throughout. Plus Philip Seymour Hoffman is a great villain, even if the MacGuffin is a bit, ahem, guff.
There were (pre-3) rumours of an Oliver Stone Mission, David Fincher had a crack at it and then Joe Carnahan got extremely close to going into production, but these all fell apart.
I’m not sure who I’d like to see take on a 4th Mission as the helmsman? It’d be great if they went for a very left-field choice matched to a strong script, perhaps Richard Kelly, Park Chanwook, Gregor Jordan or Martin McDonagh in my fantasy world!
