Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter

Although both exist within the same fictional universe Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter are separate entities and this theory only works when we look at evidence from both of them. So, firstly what is the theory? In short – Ariana Dumbledore is an obscurial, or at least she was. For those who are here to read about Star Wars, Mario or Zelda, an obscurial is the host of an obscurus and an obscurus is a powerful magical creature born from magic that has been prohibited and denied by the obscurial.

Obscurial and obscuruses came to light in the first instalment of Fantastic Beasts and where to find them. In the movie, Credence was the obscurial and his obscurus was born after he denied his magical abilities. Credence was born to wizards and later adopted by an anti-magic campaigner, so it is easy to see why he hid his abilities.

Now it is clear what an obsucrial is and how they are formed how does this relate to Ariana Dumbledore, Albus Dumbledore’s sister? At the age of 6 Ariana was attacked by muggles which lead her father to retaliate – a retaliation that had him sentenced to life in Azkaban.  This description from her brother Aberforth best summarises Ariana after the attack: “It destroyed her, what they did: She was never right again. She wouldn’t use magic, but she couldn’t get rid of it; it turned inward and drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldn’t control it, and at times she was strange and dangerous. But mostly she was sweet and scared and harmless.”

Outside of this we know very little about Ariana. What we do know however is that her uncontrolled powers lead to an explosion that claimed the life of her mother and that she herself died at 14 during a duel between Grindelwald and the two Dumbledore brothers.

Aside from these obvious signs there are further similarities between Credence and Arianna such as the fact that they were believed to be squibs due to successfully hiding their magical capabilities. Awaiting further clarification some have extended this theory to say that it was knowledge of Arianna’s obscurus that lead Grindelwald to see the potential uses of such a creature which ultimately lead to his pursuit of the one wreaking havoc in New York in Fantastic Beasts.
