  • John Smith Wins 2013 Film London Jarman Award

John Smith Wins 2013 Film London Jarman Award

London-based artist film-maker John Smith has won the 2013 Film London Jarman Award, announced 6 November at the Whitechapel Gallery, London. As winner, Smith received £10,000 and a film commission for Channel 4’s short-form arts strand, Random Acts. From the shortlist Ed Atkins, Emma Hart and Rachel Maclean will also be commissioned for Random Acts this year.

John Smith has built up an important body of experimental film and video work which has made an important contribution to artists’ moving image practice both nationally and internationally. His identification with different artistic spheres is particularly appropriate to the Jarman Award.

This is an especially important year for the Film London Jarman Award as it immediately precedes Jarman2014, a hugely important celebration of Derek Jarman (31 January 1942- 19 February 1994), commemorating 20 years since the artist’s death.

Activity will include the launches of new books and DVDs, and see the man and his work celebrated through a number of exhibitions and screening programmes, from partners including the BFI (who will present a major retrospective), Thames & Hudson, ICA and King’s College London.

Film London’s involvement in Jarman2014 includes making the Jarman Award Random Acts films freely available on the BFI Player. The agency is also working to continue the fruitful partnership between Film London and BBC Radio 4 with the development of a new audio-visual work about Jarman for both radio transmission and screening platforms. In addition, the UK-wide programme of work by the 2014 Film London Jarman Award shortlist, will tour internationally in 2014 for the first time. See: jarman2014.org

    Banshee Chapter Secures UK Distribution

Having been awarded ‘Scariest Film’ at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, as well as the ‘Scariest Movie Award’ from Total Film at this year’s Film4 FrightFest, the newly formed Intense Distribution and fast rising indie label 101 Films are delighted to announce they have acquired all UK rights to ‘Banshee Chapter’ for distribution in early 2014.

Written and directed by Blair Erickson, produced by Zachary Quinto (Star Trek) and starring Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs), Katia Winter (Dexter, Sleepy Hollow) and Michael McMillian (True Blood), ‘Banshee Chapter’ focuses on a young journalist with an appetite for controversy, as she follows the trail of a strange government research chemical that might have caused the death of her close friend. The events in this film are based on real documents, actual testimony, and evidence researched and uncovered from decades of a terrifying secret program run by the CIA.

  • Harry Potter Himself Launches Art, Kills Darlings

Harry Potter Himself Launches Art, Kills Darlings

On Thursday 21st November 2013, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will launch a unique projected art exhibition to celebrate the upcoming release of his new film KILL YOUR DARLINGS in cinemas on 6th December.

The ‘KYD (Kill Your Darlings) Cut-Up Exhibition’ will take the form of projections that will travel around the Capital over three days, being seen by thousands of Londoners in key locations.

The ‘Cut-Up’ technique, where a text is cut up and rearranged to create a new original text, was popularized in the late 1950s by writer William S. Burroughs and has since been used in a variety of creative contexts. Along with Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Lucian Carr (Dane DeHaan) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), William S. Burroughs, played by Ben Foster also features in Kill Your Darlings, a true crime-thriller based on the previously untold story of a murder that implicated the men who went on to become the great poets of the Beat Generation.

For the ‘KYD Cut-Up Exhibition’ the concept of ‘Cut-Ups’ is being broadened to include a wider range of artistic disciplines such as design, fashion, illustration, photography, art and literature.

The technique has been used creatively by artists, designers and musicians such as David Bowie, Keith Richards, Kurt Cobain and Thom Yorke.

The exhibition will be projected at sites around London on Thursday 21st, Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd November. This first of a kind exhibition will feature a selection of original ‘Cut Up’ artworks submitted by artists and designers via Facebook.

For the chance to have their work included in the ‘KYD Cut Up Exhibition’ and to attend the launch with Daniel Radcliffe on Thursday 21st November, participants are being asked to upload an image of their cut up artwork to the KILL YOUR DARLINGS official UK Facebook page no later than Sunday 17th November. More information can be found on the Facebook page or on Twitter #KYDcutUP

Mr Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan invite you to take part in the KYD Cut-Up Exhibition. Watch the video here.

  • Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary To Feature In Cornwall Film Festival

Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary To Feature In Cornwall Film Festival

Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary is proud to be showcased in this year’s Cornwall Film Festival thanks to top film maker Chris Jones.

Chris visited The Monkey Sanctuary earlier this year and interviewed primate keeper, Hollie Lewis. In the film, Hollie articulately tells the story of The Monkey Sanctuary and how it has evolved over the past 49 years into leading primate welfare charity, Wild Futures.

Hayley Dann, Head of Income Generation and PR at Wild Futures states: “It was an absolute pleasure to work with the highly professional Chris Jones this year. We are thrilled with his finished piece of work and have been proudly showing it at events across the south west and through our social networks. As a charity, we do not have a budget for films, yet we recognise it is an important communication medium in today’s world. We are therefore very grateful to Chris for producing such a quality piece of film.”

Chris Jones stated: “I am very pleased to be featured at the film festival again this year. The film was made to highlight the important work that The Monkey Sanctuary carries out on a daily basis and without which many primates would continue to suffer tremendous neglect.”

The film will shortly be embedded on The Monkey Sanctuary and Wild Futures websites and will be shown at The Monkey Sanctuary throughout its open season in 2014.

Cornwall Film Festival is now in its twelfth year and is developing a year round programme of activity to promote Cornish, international, independent and specialised cinema to new audiences and to support a diverse range of filmmaking and media production.

The Festival will again take place at Lighthouse Cinema in Newquay this year, from 7th – 10th November and will include Screen Actions young person’s film festival.
