  • Krisstian de Lara: A Quick Chat

Krisstian de Lara: A Quick Chat

We spent a short time with Krisstian de Lara, director of INVESTIGATION 13 (now on DVD and VOD). Nice chap.

There’s many different types of horror films – where does Investigation 13 fit in?

I want to say that Investigation 13 fits a specific type of horror film but it doesn’t. In a way, we let the characters and the story dictate many of, if not all, aspects of the movie and we dive into a unique innovative way of storytelling. For example, the animation. I have friends reaching out to let me know that they haven’t seen anything like this before.  And, to be honest, neither have I, and I am a fan of horror as well. It’s exciting to say that we might have created something new and that’s very special and gratifying.

Meg Foster really adds gravitas to the production as the caretaker. How long was she on set? Was she good to work with?

Meg Foster is such a phenomenal human being. Due to budgetary constraints she had limited time on set during production but she made sure I knew, whatever I needed, she was there for me. That, to me, is something very honorable as an actress of such weight in the industry and it made me respect her even more. I felt great that we had not only become friends on set but that she was also dedicated to the project as much as I was.

Is it hard to ground a horror movie?

Not at all. I’ve always enjoyed dramas and raising the stakes in this film through drama made it easy to make it believable. I do believe this could happen in real life.

How important is the sound in this film?

Visuals is only fifty percent of the film, getting to experience it with the outstanding original music from Maxwell Sterling, has really turned it into an immersive one of a kind experience.  The music is catchy, scary, and it gets you exactly where you need to be: there with Melanie Gates, the gang, and… the Mole Man.

What’s the scariest moment in the film – are you willing to reveal

Haha! I think the entire movie. After Act I, the investigation escalates until it reaches a big climax. I really feel sorry for them.

    What scares you?

Aside from meeting the Mole Man in real life, meeting an alien from outer space. That would be terrifying.

Chosen by audiences, this year’s People’s Choice Award was presented to Gary Crystal for the film Down, screening as part of the Drama category. Gold Digger Edition: Bits & Pieces

Gold Digger Edition: Bits & Pieces

With her joyously irreverent live-action reinterpretation of the famous 16th-century puppet show, writer/director Mirrah Foulkes turns the traditional story of Punch and Judy on its head and brings to life a devilishly delightful tale, starring Mia Wasikowska (Crimson Peak, Alice in Wonderland, Jane Eyre) and Damon Herriman (Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Mindhunter, Top of the Lake). In the outlandish town of Seaside, located nowhere near the coast, puppeteers Judy and Punch are trying to resurrect their marionette show. The show is a hit due to Judy’s superior puppeteering, but Punch’s driving ambition and penchant for a drink lead to an ill-fated turn of events that Judy must avenge.

1933. Gareth Jones (James Norton, Little Women, Happy Valley, McMafia) is an ambitious Welsh journalist who gained fame after his report on being the first foreign journalist to fly with Hitler. On leaving a government role, Jones decides to travel to Moscow in an attempt to get an interview with Stalin himself. Hearing murmurs of government-induced famine, Jones travels clandestinely to Ukraine, where he witnesses the atrocities of man-made starvation. Deported back to London, Jones publishes an article revealing the horrors he witnessed but is accused of being a liar by those who have an interest in silencing him. As the death count mounts, Jones has to fight for the truth.

The debut feature, Sons of Denmark, from director Ulaa Salim is a powerful, unnerving and provocative film that looks at the impact of radicalised society, set in an alternate (though all-too-believable) Denmark.

In the 15 years since SUPER SIZE ME, the fast-food industry has undergone a makeover. Today, chain restaurants tout food that’s “healthy,” “organic,” and “natural.” Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock explores this new reality with an approach even more immersive and subversive than that used for his first film: he sets out to open his own chicken franchise. We follow him every step of the way, from raising poultry and conjuring recipes to designing the brand and scouting a location. Spurlock brings his disarming humour to uncover the truths and lies behind this multibillion-dollar industry.

Pedro, a 70-year-old gay nurse, and a big fan of Greta Garbo, needs to find an empty bed in the hospital where he works to save his best friend, Daniela. To do so he decides to help Jean, a criminal in police custody, escape from the premises. But then, worried about Jean’s health, Pedro sets the criminal up in his apartment to treat his wounds. The two wind up having a highly-charged affair that brings to the surface Pedro’s own solitude, now augmented by Daniela’s imminent death.
