There’s A Zombie Outside: Popcorn Frights Film Festival Review

The saying goes that life can often imitate art…and ‘There’s A Zombie Outside’ has taken that phrase to heart!

‘There’s A Zombie Outside’ follows a filmmaker as he starts to think a zombie is stalking him, but is this all in his head?

This is the type of film where it’s better watched without having any prior knowledge of the synopsis and, going into this, I thought I was in for a blood-splattered run-of-the-mill zombie film. But it further escalates into something so much more and does so mostly successfully.

The cast is small, but fantastic; the majority of scenes only had 2 people, which means that the acting and writing had to be able to carry the scenes, and they really do. Ben Baur (Hunting Season) plays Ben, a filmmaker who’s always mentally beating himself up about his constant failures and flops within his work to the point of feeling burnt out. Right from the opening scene, he effortlessly carries the film on his shoulders as it journeys through his obscure experience and his performance is both wonderful and strangely heartbreaking. ‘There’s A Zombie Outside’ touches on the subject of feeling burnt out and unmotivated when faced with failures, a subject that is very relevant, especially in a post-COVID world.

After lockdown, we’ve come to recognize the feeling of being pushed to the limit in terms of work and mental health and the situation revolving around this has quickly become a socially acceptable topic to discuss. It’s one of the first horror films I’ve seen, post-COVID, to touch on this topic, and that’s an aspect that I not only respect but one that made me feel sympathetic towards Ben. And, while it is a small cast, the other actors are fantastic too. The majority of the film focuses on Ben and his friend Taryn (Phylicia Wissa – Anonymously Nominated: The Anthology Series), someone who becomes estranged from him through his actions, but is supportive. Her performance was great as she starts as a friend who’s confused by her friend’s actions to supportive and caring. Her character was not only likable, but their onscreen chemistry was perfect; it really felt like they hadn’t seen each other in a long time but had known each other for even longer. Through their performances together, it’s evident that they have history, and it was enjoyable to watch.

But, surprisingly and delightfully, ‘There’s A Zombie Outside’ also carries its LGBT+ representation on its sleeve. Not only is Ben gay but even the characters in his films identify as queer too; through this, it’s clear that he wants to make it as a queer filmmaker, making horror films within the queer subgenre. But, with this, comes its unfortunate issues and this is where the commentary on the film industry comes in, as it highlights the struggles that queer filmmakers and tv creators have when trying to get their projects off the ground. It’s frustrating to watch, as it’s implied that the gateway to mainstream moviemaking will never happen for Ben if he continues with the path he’s taking in terms of his filmography. However, it’s an important commentary to have as this is an ongoing issue in the industry and one that should be focused on and talked about.

Due to the overall premise, most of the dialogue keeps you guessing right up until the third act. Unfortunately, this third act is where the film decides to ‘tell rather than show’ what was going on; there’s a couple of scenes where Ben directly tells a character what’s going on, which is a shame. My main criticism with recent films has always been that its runtime is too long, but ‘There’s A Zombie Outside’ would’ve benefited from being 10-15 minutes longer, bringing it up to the 90-minute mark. It could have then used that extra time to demonstrate more visual examples of what was going on around Ben instead of using exposition and flashbacks of the same scenes on multiple occasions.

Overall, ‘There’s A Zombie Outside’ is best watched without any prior knowledge of the synopsis. It is a fantastic film into the journey of a filmmaker’s break with reality, and has some enjoyable and, at times heartbreaking, performances. Plus, it has something to say regarding the LGBT+ filmmaking industry and to great effect. And, while the third act’s dialogue does execute its exposition rather directly, it’s still a really interesting concept, making this a film that I would be happy to re-experience.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew – Trailer Talk.

The last video on Battle Royale With Cheese’s Youtube channel revolved around this year’s Disney’s D23 event, which took place over the weekend. However, one trailer that was released while I was editing the video was for a new ‘Star Wars’ series.

‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ follows a group of four kids as they make an incredible discovery on their home planet, leading to an adventure of wonder and danger.

My interest in ‘Star Wars’ has decreased a lot ever since the release of 2017’s ‘The Last Jedi’. It feels like the majority of the shows and films have all stayed focused on the same returning characters of the original and prequel trilogies. However, the release of ‘Andor’ started giving me hope that the brand could create new stories with completely new characters, and ‘Skeleton Crew’ has further encouraged that hope.

With the show having kids playing the main characters, it’ll not only help get new, younger, fans into ‘Star Wars’, but it’ll also provide a new perspective into the wonders of the expansive galaxies in the franchise.

‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ not only looks like it’ll be a lot of fun, but it looks like it will stand out within the franchise. Plus, Jude Law has been cast and, while his character hasn’t yet been revealed, it’ll be great to see him in the show. I had lost interest in ‘Star Wars’ but, with ‘Andor’ and now this show, my interest is definitely returning.

Squid Game: Season 2 – Trailer Talk

Squid Game: Season 2 – Trailer Talk.

2021 saw the release of one of Netflix’s biggest shows: ‘Squid Game’. It was an amazing, and gruesome, series and was extremely successful, even spawning a spin-off reality show. Thus, the games will continue later this year.

‘Squid Game’ is a South Korean show that follows a group of people who take part in a deadly set of child-like games in order to win a huge cash prize.

Considering its monumental success, it’s surprising that Season 2 took three years to be announced, but it’s one I’m looking forward to. The teaser is simple but very effective as what looks like a regular track race quickly merges, and changes, into something deadly. Considering the ending of the first season, the show could go into a few directions, so I’m intrigued to know where it will go, and what playground/child-like games will be played. Will it continue to follow Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae – The Acolyte) as he tries to stop the games, or will it go into the backstory of The Front Man?

Or the show could choose to go with both storylines because, at the end of the trailer, season 3 was also announced, serving as the final season. This was a big surprise, and I do appreciate that the 3rd season will be the final one as it won’t feel like it’s overstaying its welcome.

Furthermore, fans won’t have to wait too long to find out what the new season will do, as it releases on 26th December this year!

    Terrifier 3: Trailer Talk

Back in November 2023, the third film in the ‘Terrifier’ franchise was announced via a creepy trailer revealing Art the Clown at a house at Christmas Time. Now another trailer has been released along with an official release date.

‘Terrifier 3’ once again follows the crazy clown killer Art as he goes on a murderous rampage during the Christmas holidays.

After the last two films pushed the limits of what was considered grotesque and gruesome, it should come as to no surprise to see that the third entry is looking to further increase the violence onscreen. Plus, ‘Terrifier’ fans know what to expect from the films at this point. And yet, the trailer still does a fantastic job at mentally preparing them for what’s to come, by only showing quick flashes of various violent scenes from the film, while a creepily slow rendition of the carol ‘Silent Night’ is playing. It’s very simple but extremely effective.

It looks like ‘Terrifier 3’ will further increase the violence and gore if that’s even possible, and the trailer is fantastically executed (pun intended). But, with this being the supposed last entry in the ‘Terrifier’ franchise, there is wonder as to whether Art the Clown will finally be destroyed once and for all.

Captain America: Brave New World – Trailer Talk

It’s been 3 years since fans saw the reveal of the MCU’s new Captain America, but the first trailer for ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is finally here.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ stars Anthony Mackie (Twisted Metal, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, as he takes on the role of Captain America and finds himself in the middle of an international incident.

When I reviewed ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ back in 2021, I commented on the finale episode saying that Sam was a perfect fit for the Captain America role, given his personality and morales. This, and the suit being a mixture of his Falcon wing technology and the original suit were fantastic, and I still stand by those thoughts. And, while the look of the suit has been changed a little for the feature film, it still looks amazing. Furthermore, I am looking forward to finally seeing Sam become Captain America.

But another aspect to be excited for is the introduction of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross. Played by Harrison Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones), he’s introduced in the trailer as an authoritarian figure. But comics fans will know the character more as the Red Hulk, a character that is deemed more a villain/anti-hero than a hero. This addition interests me because it demonstrates that Marvel is once again branching out to put their more obscure characters onscreen.

Despite not being very impressed with the MCU’s work in the last couple of years, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is one film that I’m looking forward to from the studio. I’m not sure why this film took so long to get off the ground (pun intended), but I’m happy that it’s finally happening with a brand-new Captain America that is deserving of that role. Plus, the addition of the Red Hulk means that Marvel is still happy to include more obscure characters onscreen; let’s hope the writing is of a decent quality compared to their films and shows in the last couple of years!
