    Hostile Dimensions: Review

‘Hostile Dimensions’ follows Sam and Ash (Annabel Logan/Joma West – Death of a Vlogger), two documentary filmmakers who discover a door to alternate dimensions and use this to find a missing graffiti artist.

Director Graham Hughes already won me over with his fantastically creepy film ‘Death of a Vlogger’ back in 2019, so I was intrigued to know what his next feature film would be. And, after the positive feedback from ‘Hostile Dimensions’ London Frightfest Film Festival screening in 2023, the film only caught my attention more. Just like ‘Death of a Vlogger’, Graham Hughes delivers another fun and, at times, creepy film.

‘Hostile Dimensions’ does have a very small cast, consisting of only nine actors, but they’re all fantastic. Annabel Logan and Joma West have wonderful onscreen chemistry; right from the first scene, they detail their previous filmography in comparison to what they want to do next. Right from their first conversation onscreen, it’s clear that they have a history making films together and have done this work for years. But, as the film progresses, the struggles that they go through is also evident; their previous films haven’t done well, and Sam especially feels trapped. What she wants to achieve hasn’t yet happened and she’s losing hope that it will happen; the strange scenario is actually exactly what she might need in order to change her perspective on life and her goals. But both Sam and Ash’s drive to keep going with their investigation and discovery is both interesting and, at times, tense as they explore the different dimensions the door offers them.

Which is where the actual focus of the film comes in: the various dimensions featured in ‘Hostile Dimensions’. The film doesn’t reach its full potential in terms of what it could show, and only includes a small amount of them. But, considering the film’s 80-minute runtime, it does a good job at showing enough to fully demonstrate the purpose behind the door. Furthermore, the various dimensions are where the film’s humour and scares make their appearance, both of which are delivered perfectly. ‘Hostile Dimensions’ clearly knows the absurd plot it’s working with and embraces it, giving viewers some really funny or strange imagery, some of which include a very unique Giant Panda plushie, a talking dog and something that could easily belong in the video game ‘Minecraft’. It knows when the film needs to be funny, and the humour is brilliantly executed. But it also contains some fantastic scares and jumpscares and utilizes this beautifully; some scares occur when the subject jumps out and there are other scares that occur in the background of a scene. The film beautifully balances both styles of scares, as well as the humour, when telling its strange story.

‘Hostile Dimensions’ is yet another enjoyable delight from director Graham Hughes. The small cast are fantastic and comfortably carry the film on their shoulders. While a few more visually different dimensions could’ve been shown, it’s still interesting to see which ones the film does show. Not only that but this aspect is how the film brings out its humour and scares, both of which are great; it’s very funny when it needs to be and really creepy when it’s called for, which includes a couple of extremely well executed jumpscares. From ‘Death of a Vlogger’ to this, Graham Hughes is definitely one to follow and I look forward to seeing what his next feature film is.

    Wolf Man: Trailer Talk

After 2020’s ‘Invisible Man’, Leigh Whannel has picked up another Universal Monsters title to remake: the Wolf Man.

‘Wolf Man’ stars Julia Garner (Ozark), Christopher Abbot (It Comes At Night, Poor Things, Possessor) and Matilda Firth (Hullraisers) as a family who suddenly find that a curse has fallen onto one of them.

The trailer is a great example of getting moviegoers attention without giving too much away; it only shows the general idea of something terrorizing the town and then the focal family. And, after ‘The Invisible Man’, 2018’s ‘Upgrade’ and, of course ‘Saw’, director Leigh Whannel has proven his talents when it comes to writing great horror and sci-fi films.

Because of this, I have faith that this will be another great adaptation. The only concern that seems to be shared amongst horror fans is the design of the Wolf Man itself, especially after seeing the supposed creature at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights event. While it doesn’t resemble a wolf at all, there’s rumours that this specific variation is just a concept design.

Despite this, ‘Wolf Man’ has potential to be great. Not only does it have a fantastic director attached, but the trailer does a wonderful job at not showing too much in terms of visuals and plot details. It instead opts to give horror fans a general idea of the film to create dread, which works beautifully.

    A Minecraft Movie: Trailer Talk

Continuing the trend of video game adaptations, the trailer for the live action ‘Minecraft’ film was released earlier this week.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ stars Jack Black (School of Rock, The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and Jason Momoa (Fast X, Aquaman), where a small group of people are suddenly transported into the world of the famous video game ‘Minecraft’.

The moment it was announced that this going to take the live action route, fans were worried…and they had every right to be. Not only do the animals of the game look nightmarish in this style, but the proportions of the humans don’t look right against the green screen background, making it jarring.

Furthermore, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ has decided to choose the recent ‘Jumanji’ concept of real-world people being transported into a video game. While this works for ‘Jumanji’, it’s boring here because the source game isn’t new and, yet the characters’ involved have supposedly never heard of it before.

I hope I’m proven wrong about ‘A Minecraft Movie’ but, from what I’ve seen so far, it looks terrible. After ‘The Last of Us’, ‘Five Nights At Freddys’ and the ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ franchise, amongst a few others, I thought the industry had finally figured out how to adapt video games to screens. However, as proved by the recent ‘Borderlands’ film earnings and now this, that might not be the case.

Plus, Jack Black has been cast as the playable character Steve, but he just looks like he’ll be playing himself and add nothing to the character. With a game like ‘Minecraft’, where everything is a blank canvas, it would be interesting to see if there is going to be more to the onscreen version of Steve. But I would’ve preferred the adaptation to be animated, instead of the terrifying look that this film is going to give fans.

    Screamboat/Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare – Trailer Talk

    Screamboat/Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare – Trailer Talk

The past week saw two trailers released, both based around a Disney property: Steamboat Willie and Peter Pan.

‘Screamboat’ follows of group of New Yorkers on a boat, as they come face to face with a familiar Disney icon. Only this time, the mouse has turned murderous.

The synopsis and look of the film are already a lot better than the other Steamboat Willie-based horror ‘The Mousetrap’ (previously titled ‘Mickey’s Mousetrap’). Not only that but this film will actually use the character of Steamboat Willie; hopefully he’ll be portrayed as a CGI or fully cartoon-looking character instead of a human in a Mickey mask. But, out of the two horror films that have been released after Steamboat’s copyright lifted, ‘Screamboat’ is the one that I am more interested in.

The second trailer was for ‘Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare’, which will see Peter becoming a child murderer, promising to take them to Neverland.

This film also has potential to actually be good as well as dark, not only because of the plot, but because of the implications that the original book gives readers. It makes sense for Peter Pan to be turned into a horror film, unlike the previous entry in this film’s universe ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey’. After the second ‘Blood & Honey’ film, it seems like a bigger budget was given because the look of this has improved since the previous two films in the so-called ‘Poohniverse’. However, it also resembles that of the 2019 film ‘Joker’ as well as 2021’s ‘The Black Phone’, even including some visuals that are very similar to both films.

While both films are ridiculous, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued by them. ‘Screamboat’ has the potential to be enjoyable and I’m interested to know how the film will portray the previously owned Disney character. Meanwhile, ‘Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare’ makes sense to be a horror film considering some implications in its source material. If they’re not good then I, at least, hope they’re enjoyable horror films.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3: Trailer Talk

Sonic The Hedgehog 3: Trailer Talk

After rumours flew around a couple of weeks regarding the trailer for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’, the first trailer for the anticipated sequel is here!

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ will see Sonic (Ben Schwartz – Parks & Recreation, Sonic the Hedgehog), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey – Sonic Game Franchise, The Loud House) and Knuckles (Idris Elba – Zootopia, Thor: Love & Thunder) come face-to-face with Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves- John Wick, Toy Story 4) for the first time on the big screen.

Shadow is my all-time favourite character from the franchise so, when he was revealed in the end credits scene for the second movie, I was excited but wary as to whether the upcoming film would treat him right. And it looks like they will do. Shadow, himself, looks incredible and the confirmation of Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow makes it a perfect match. My only concern was whether the film would go into Shadow’s tragic backstory and, if it did, would the story be softened at all. But, from the trailer, it looks like it won’t be because it shows Shadow interacting with the young daughter of his creator, Maria. Plus, the film is sure to include references and easter eggs from the video game ‘Sonic Adventure 2’.

The surprising aspect of the trailer is the return of Jim Carrey, who will reprise his role as Dr Robotnik. After the second film, Carrey announced that he was retiring from acting so it’s a nice surprise to see him return, and with the canonical look from the source material.

I’ve been extremely excited for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ ever since the reveal of Shadow, and the first trailer has me even more excited. Shadow looks and sounds incredible, and completely accurate to the games. And, from the trailer, it seems like the film will allow for some more serious scenes when focusing on him, something that I will be thankful for. While the trailer came out later than fans predicted, it’s been worth the wait.
