    For The Weekend: Workplace Comedies

    By Benjamin Gummery.

This week we delve into the great font of comedy that is the workplace-orientated film. Some of these you might have heard of but hopefully others you will discover for the first time. The selection is fairly complimentary so if you have seen one of these films and enjoyed it you should at-least appreciate the others.

    Office Space (1999)
Office Space is written and directed by Mike Judge (creator of the TV cartoon Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill) and stars Jennifer Aniston & Ron Livingston. The plot centres around a group of programmers and their increasing frustration with the company they work with leading to some classic comedy moments. Central character Peter Gibbons'(Livingston) goes on a journey of self-discovery and develops a relationship with waitress Joanna(Aniston) but the supporting cast are also hilarious. This is a classic American comedy with heart & soul; informed by Mike Judge’s confident ‘White Collar’ comic style.

    Clerks (1994)
Don’t be put off by the Black & White; this is the independent cult comedy film debut of writer/director Kevin Smith. The film centres around a ‘day in the life’ of store clerks Dante(Brian O’Halloran) and Randall(Jeff Anderson) who work at a small convenience and video rental store in New Jersey. The film is littered with hilarious walk-in characters, gags and pop culture references. Informed by Smith’s own time working in a convenience store; the characters and humour are easy to relate to.

    Waiting… (2005)
Often referred to as ‘Clerks in a restaurant’, Waiting.. (Written & Directed by Rob McKittrick) is a gross-out comedy ‘day in the life’ of the staff at a chain restaurant and their struggles with customers, management, their lives and each other. The film features early performances from Ryan Reynolds, Justin Long, Anna Faris & David Koechner.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard (2009)
From director Neal Brennan & Producers Adam McKay/Will Ferrell (Talladegah Nights/Step Brothers/Anchorman); ‘The Goods’ tells the story of a struggling car dealership which hires in a ‘mercenary’ sales team to turn around the lot’s fortunes. Starring Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, David Koechner and Craig Robinson the films shows the struggles of the staff to adapt to new selling tactics with hilarious consequences.

This is the film equivalent of a TV ‘sit-com’; where the comedy flows naturally from characters in a certain situation; although it may lead off on different tangents and become a sub-genre film (i.e. Rom Com, Dark Comedy).

Please leave your comments and suggestions. What is your favourite Workplace comedy? What do you think about this sub-genre? Any suggestions for future features welcome.

  • Kevin Smith, Podcasts & The Power Of Fandom

Kevin Smith, Podcasts & The Power Of Fandom

    By Benjamin Gummery.

Kevin Smith is arguably best known for his film career as a writer/director; especially for his debut film Clerks but also Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, Clerks II, Zac and Miri Make a Porno, Cop Out and Red State.

However, in recent years he has also became known in the podcast arena; appearing in several highly-rated weekly podcasts distributed by his own ‘Smodcast Internet Radio‘ Network. Smith was already well known for his public appearances and Q&A’s; some of which have been filmed and released. It therefore seemed like a logical step forward when he started his first show ‘Smodcast’ with friend and producer Scott Mosier in 2007. This led to other successful shows such as ‘Hollywood Babble-On’, ‘Jay & Silent Bob Get Old’ and ‘Fatman on Batman’.

However, last year things went full circle for Smith. On episode 259 of SModcast Smith & Mosier talked about a Gumtree advert from the UK where a home-owner was offering a living situation free of charge; but only if the lodger agreed to dress as a walrus. Smith proposed this would be a good story for a horror film and asked listeners to tweet #WalrusYes of they agreed. The response was overwhelming and led to Smith pursuing the idea for real with the film ‘Tusk’. Filming began in Late 2013 and the film is set for release September 27th 2014 in the US; starring Michael Parks, Justin Long, Hayley Joel Osment & Genesis Rodriguez. This is believed to be the first time a film has been based on a podcast.

Smith’s connection with fans and in-particular his sharing of tales from his own exploits as an independent film-maker as well as his advocacy of pod-casting has inspired many to try their own hand at film-making, podcasting and other endeavours.

Scottish student film-maker Christopher Downie created a series of ‘fan-film’ videos based around the life and works of Smith as re-told in his Q&A’s, podcasts, commentary tracks & books. These started off as shorts produced for YouTube until the Indie GoGo funded short feature ‘Get Greedo’; which has led to these videos being displayed on Kevin Smith’s own YouTube Channel. The film-maker is currently working on a feature-length Bio-pic of Kevin Smith called ‘Shooting Clerks’ due for release in 2015 based around the making of ‘Clerks’ and the project is endorsed by Smith himself.

Elsewhere, Scott Holden; who is a long-time fan of Smith, was inspired after reading Smith’s book ‘Tough Shit’ to try his hand at pod-casting with a friend, leading to the successful chat-cast  ‘Bone Crushing Juggernaut’. Following on from this success and his fandom of Smith he launched his own fan podcast ‘ThatMan on Fatman‘. Within the first few episodes the show attracted a good range of guests including cast members from Smith’s films as well other fans & podcasts. The show has a growing following with-in the fan community.

All this goes to show how powerful and inspiring this kind  ‘fandom’ can be and just how far it can lead if pursued. In the age of the Internet it is possible for anyone to earn some kind of following; whatever the subject matter. Creativity begets creativity and risk begets risk.

Smith has already announced his next film project ‘Yoga Hosers’ which is also based on a podcast episode. A spin-off from the Tusk; the film is being described a ‘female comic-book/action hero movie’ and will star Johnny Depp alongside his daughter Lily-Rose & Smith’s daughter Harley-Quinn in the lead roles. The main cast from Tusk will also return. Filming is set to begin in late 2014.

If you have or know of a fan-film, podcast or similar project you would like featured on the blog please get in-touch.

Movie Gem Of The Week: The Living Wake (2007)

The Living Wake (2007) directed by Sol Tryon & written by Mike O”Connel/Peter Kline is a delightful and somewhat disturbing trip to the absurd in a similar vein to Withnail & I, Napolean Dynamite & Wes Anderson”s “Rushmore”.

The film follows the journey of eccentric drunk K. Roth Binew(Mike O”Connell) who after discovering he will die from a rare terminal disease sets about putting his affairs in order and 01 The London boarding school of Economics and Political Science Houghton Street London WC2A 2AE   Tel: +44 (0)20 7955 7768 Fax: +44 (0)20 7955 7421 Email: uolip@lse. takes the bizarre decision to beat death by organising his own living wake with the aid of his friend & aide Mills(Jesse Eisenberg). Along the way we meet a series of increasingly bizarre and baffling characters; both enemies and friends, that later form the wake party. K Roth”s deceased father(Jim Gaffigan) is also ever present in the film.

Mike O”Connell pulls off a genius comic performance as K. Roth; a character for which there is no real point of reference. There is a real flavour of English eccentricity to the film; which is reflected by the setting. If you appreciate the bizarre side of comedy then this comes highly recommended.
