Trailer Talk: January 2026

A new year brings in some new trailers, starting with ‘Supergirl’!

After her introduction in last year’s ‘Superman’ film, ‘Supergirl’ is finally getting her own movie over 30 years later and it looks fantastic. Once again, James Gunn’s music choice that helps accompany the visuals really work and it’s a film that I’m really looking forward to. But, despite its cheerful tone on the surface, ‘Supergirl’ will surely have some emotional scenes given her tragic backstory.

Continuing the superhero theme, four trailers for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ were released last month, but originally only during screenings of ‘Avatar: Fire & Ash’. A few weeks later, these trailers were uploaded to Youtube, with the latest one uploading 2 weeks ago. While the first two are used to reveal the return of Thor and Steve Rogers, decisions that I deem dull and unnecessary, the final two officially introduce the X-Men and Fantastic Four to the Avengers and are the most interesting. The X-Men reintroduces Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as Professor X and Magneto, and giving us a glimpse of Cyclops who looks incredible. It’s uncertain why Xavier’s school is destroyed, but we’re sure to get our answers when the film comes out in December. The last trailer shows Sheri meeting the Fantastic Four for the first time, a meeting that is unique within the MCU but an intriguing one, nonetheless. Hopefully, the trailers for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ continue to be released in this fashion because they’re gaining attention despite the confusion over how Dr Doom will be properly introduced as the villain.

Another Disney property that got a new trailer last week was ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’. Star Wars is an IP that I’ve gotten bored of in the last few years, however, this trailer has grabbed my attention for two reasons. The first being the focal character, who interests me a lot. Especially since fans were hardly given any information on Darth Maul all the back in 1999. And, while giving the spotlight to a smaller character can ruin their appeal (e.g.: ‘The Book of Boba Fett’), the team behind the show is what gives me faith that this will be really good. The creative team behind ‘The Clone Wars’ are working on this, and this is immediately evident from the gorgeous animation and stunning visuals.
