A Minecraft Movie: Trailer Talk

Continuing the trend of video game adaptations, the trailer for the live action ‘Minecraft’ film was released earlier this week.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ stars Jack Black (School of Rock, The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and Jason Momoa (Fast X, Aquaman), where a small group of people are suddenly transported into the world of the famous video game ‘Minecraft’.

The moment it was announced that this going to take the live action route, fans were worried…and they had every right to be. Not only do the animals of the game look nightmarish in this style, but the proportions of the humans don’t look right against the green screen background, making it jarring.

Furthermore, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ has decided to choose the recent ‘Jumanji’ concept of real-world people being transported into a video game. While this works for ‘Jumanji’, it’s boring here because the source game isn’t new and, yet the characters’ involved have supposedly never heard of it before.

I hope I’m proven wrong about ‘A Minecraft Movie’ but, from what I’ve seen so far, it looks terrible. After ‘The Last of Us’, ‘Five Nights At Freddys’ and the ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ franchise, amongst a few others, I thought the industry had finally figured out how to adapt video games to screens. However, as proved by the recent ‘Borderlands’ film earnings and now this, that might not be the case.

Plus, Jack Black has been cast as the playable character Steve, but he just looks like he’ll be playing himself and add nothing to the character. With a game like ‘Minecraft’, where everything is a blank canvas, it would be interesting to see if there is going to be more to the onscreen version of Steve. But I would’ve preferred the adaptation to be animated, instead of the terrifying look that this film is going to give fans.

Megan’s taste in films are interesting: her favourite films are ‘Space Jam’, Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Cat Returns’, as well as horror films ‘Saw’, ‘Drag Me To Hell’ and ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’. When she’s not watching films, she’ll be spending precious hours playing ‘Crash Bandicoot’.
